Galaxy Beat Wellington Phoenix 4-1

By: Laurie | December 1st, 2007

beckham-new-zealand.jpgI would have given pregame info, but I’m befuddled by that whole International Dateline thing. So instead I’ll give you postgame info. Does that work?

The Galaxy actually won yesterday, beating New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix 4-1. Goals by Clint Mathis, Landon Donovan, Carlos Pavon and, yes, David Beckham, who slotted home a PK.

My favorite quote of the game:

“That’s one of the biggest parts of my game, striking the ball, so I was pleased with that,” Beckham said.

What? No, really?

Despite the scoreline it was an even match, Galaxy owing much to a string of quality saves from the two goalkeepers they used, Joe Cannon and Steve Cronin.

On a sunny and warm evening the near-capacity crowd at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium broke the previous New Zealand record for a soccer match, beating the 31,000 for a World Cup playoff between New Zealand and Kuwait in Auckland in 1981.

I have to spend the day at one of those obliga-party things, but I’ll search out video for you when I get back. If you have links, leave them in the comments.

Ooh, thanks, Melissa!! Is it the whole game? (I don’t have time to watch the whole thing at the moment. I need to go dig Christmas-y clothes out of somewhere in my closet.)

Ed, I just stole your line and included it in the Daily Dose on the main page, up later today. No room to give you credit, sorry, but we all know where it came from. :-)

Yeah, Cobi played. Mathis got injured, and I don’t think they had many other options, so they brought in Cobi.

He started warming up when Mathis got injured, Mathis went back in for a few minutes, and then Cobi came on for him. I was wondering if he had to borrow boots!!! Nice to see the smile out there again.
