Pressure ESPN to Run the US U-20 Games
By: Laurie | July 9th, 2007I’m taking a break from my usual search for trivial Galaxy matters and Beckham-related trash (because, seriously, how can you top a diamond-encrusted vibrator? Unless, of course, somebody could link me to photos) to discuss serious soccer stuff.
Did anybody else see the US-Brazil U-20 World Cup match? An incredible game. Seriously, some of the most oh-my-Lord-beautiful soccer I’ve seen in ages. It’s the only time in my life I’ve ever wanted to holler U!S!A! U!S!A! U!S!A! at the TV screen. And the only reason I was able to see it was because ESPN made a last-minute decision to preempt some major sport like, I dunno, billiards, or poker, so they could run it on ESPN rather than ESPN-U (which my cable guys don’t carry.) One of the best sports programming decisions ever, in my opinion.
I found this petition on On Soccer, who found it in a comment on Steven Goff’s blog. It’s a form to use to pressure ESPN to carry at least the remaining US games on a real station, like ESPN or ESPN2. (Steven, if you can pull this one off, I’ll almost forgive you for that Zidane-to-Galaxy rumor. Almost.)
So here’s the deal. First thing, click here and go to ESPN and make your request. (Nicely, please. It might even be a good idea to suck up and thank them for previous good choices like the US-Brazil game. Decision-makers love it when you suck up to them. Trust me on this one.)
Second thing: If you write a blog of your own, include the link so YOUR readers get the message.
And Third: Pass on the message to all your sports-loving friends. (Or better yet, link them to this post. What can I say? I like the hits.)

Just added my email to the growing list. That was a fantastic game, and being able to watch it at the pub rather than on my semi-legal internet TV connection was that much better. I was out of beer at home, so it was much better indeed. Excellent post, sister-in-blog Laurie. I hope it happens.

I did my best to kiss a little ESPN ass. Hopefully we can enjoy some more live television instead of having to watch it on a pixelated computer screen. Great post Laurie!

Thanks for point the petition out, Laurie. Youth tournaments are so fun to watch, as kids aren’t as inhibited in their playing as they are when they are 30 year old jaded superstars. If ESPN wants to increase interest in soccer, they need to offer more expansive programming.

I’m loving those matches, they’re on our local Spanish station (making the reporting that much less painful as well), so I’ve been watching as many as I can. I feel like I did the season I realized that college basketball was more fun than the NBA–for similar reasons. Thanks for the link.
