Sound Off on the Galaxy Season

By: Laurie | September 4th, 2007

Reading the press about the Galaxy these days is like reading up on the dissection of a dead body. Everybody and his dog is ripping into the season, the Beckham experiment, the Galaxy front office, MLS in general and all the botched decision making and bad luck that’s gone on in 2007. India, Malaysia, Singapore and, of course, England are all getting into the act.

How many different ways are there to say, “The Beckham experiment has failed”?

A lot, apparently.

Seriously, this is all I’m seeing about the Galaxy lately. And our Galaxy guys are way too sweet to get into prostitution scandals like those English guys, so we have no distractions. (And I’m sure that it’s not just that they’re too broke. It’s because we have nice guys. Nice, broke guys, yes. But the key word here is “nice.”)

So as I’m searching for other topics to write on, we might as well head down the same road ourselves. Offer up your opinion. What’s the status of the Beckham experiment? What should we do next year? Who should stay? Who should go? What do we need to make it better?

Here’s your chance: Sound off!

Not one answer with any substance, all different phrasings of almost nothing. Simple things too, why not just say whether next season's ticket prices are going up or not, why not just say whether Beckham's ankle had torn ligaments...and is it possible that ANYONE can't come up with ONE thing they would have done differently over the past eight weeks, most of all the team's GM!? The fact that he simply did not respond to that question confirmed that there's absolutely no point in listening to him speak. It is embarasing.
  • Wow, I watched FFF a day late and Dave was spot on - that was brutal! Lalas would make a good senator, but he's a horrible face for the Galaxy. It was easy to see that few/no callers were buying his non-answers and kept pelting him with hard questions about his, and the team's performance. He did say the buck stops with him and he would understand if he was asked to leave, but what was most telling came when a caller asked something to the effect of - if you picked the players and you believe in them and the coach, then after two years of missing the playoffs, what IS the problem? And, like nearly every other question, he had no answer for it.

He did MLS and the Galaxy a favor by going on TV and taking the slings (although, after that performance he may have hurt the cause more than he helped by being the whipping boy) and knowing what was coming means he isn't afraid of the criticism, but to be asked directly about what was learned over two years of poor performance and having, literally, NO answers was pretty embarrassing. I felt a little bad for the Galaxy players if they were watching that disaster. Well, not Martino - I'm amazed he's getting a paycheck to play soccer.

Nice guys go to prostitutes, too.
  • Wow, Lalas is getting shalacked
  • Hey Laurie - Lalas is on Fox Football Fone In. Go Watch!

I was going to suggest finding the screenwriters that had the public believing a whole season of "Dallas" was a dream (so that they could wake up to watch the whole thing start over and end JUST the way they wanted...fun), but am I the only one old enough to have watched Dallas? No need to lie to make me feel better...I can handle the brutal truth.
  • Well, after the disappointment and depression that the last week with the Galaxy has caused me and I am sure many others, I have made peace with this season and have let it go. It is over. But I do want to see Lalas gone. He has made a trainwreck out of our team and I am ready to see him go. We need to let go of some players and bring in a decent team for Becks to deal with.

I know that many folks in the media are talking about Becks wanting to go back to England but they fail to explain that he wants to go on loan to make sure to ge his 100th cap with the national team. I don't blame him for that...I would do the same. What's the point of playing exhibition games so they can get more money exploiting his image? I found this on Daily Express:

  • Erick, are you trying to get on my good side?

    It's working.

Beckham Experiement: Mis-managed but not yet a failure. True test comes in 2008. Plenty of blame to go around: Real Madrid for pumping him with drugs and playing him 60 minutes on a seriously injured ankle, McLauren for 90 minutes in a meaningless friendly, Yallop for 90 minutes in a 3-0 rout 24 hours later, Beckahm for insisting he could play in all those damn games.

Keep for sure: Cannon, Xavier, Randolph, Albright, Harden, Harmse, Becks, Donovan

Cut for sure: Buddle, Pavon, Klein (unless he agrees to play for basically nothing), Glinton

Could go either way: Gordon, Jazic, Vagenas, Grey, Veris, Kirk, Martino

Veris, Kirk, and Harden are all young and may have upsides. Harden did okay for a rookie, but he's no Parkhurst or Boswell. Veris and Kirk aren't ready for primetime, but they also haven't really improved with exposure the way Randolph has. Martino had his moments, but he's fallen off form for the last 3 months.

Gordon could be a decent sub, but he has feet of concrete and the dribbling skills of a spastic gopher.

The Gals need to get some talented youngsters in the fold and I'd say trade, but I don't know who would take what we want to give away. This means finding our own free agents the way that FC Dallas and DC United have over the past few years. I would kill for a Juan Toja or a Fred to pair with Becks.

But first it means shooting Lalas in the head and getting someone in who can oversee a scouting system, a youth development program, and player acquisitions.
