The Galaxy Season Ends

By: Laurie | October 21st, 2007

This time, sadly, my headline is correct. Chicago 1-0 Galaxy on a 93rd minute goal by Galaxy reject John Thorrington.

And what else is there to say?sad-face.jpg

Hey I AM a Beckham fangirl - a FOOTBALL fangirl. Hmmm, Tony, what makes you think Beckham's got a "pretty face" anyway? What have you been looking at while I've been watching his brilliant crosses all these years?
  • That last "ladies" comment made me realize something. This blog has been blessedly free of Beckham fangirls. Thank you, ladies (and gentlemen, for that matter), for seeing the big picture!!
  • I know you ladies can care less how he plays as long as he has that pretty face.. As far as playing soccer, so far zero goals… Pathetic..

Because hell yeah. We "ladies" couldn't possibly care about the game or anything.

What's that round thingie they're kicking around again?
  • Tony
I guess we'll see if Beckham is worth the money next year.. I know you ladies can care less how he plays as long as he has that pretty face.. As far as playing soccer, so far zero goals... Pathetic..

I'm with you on kids and Cobi, Laurie and Jenl, and also worried about the coming cuts. Hoping a rare flash of sense causes league to raise payroll cap.

Tony, save your decision on whether Beckham's a waste until you've seen him play. I only questioned whether he should be on the pitch with an injury that keeps him from doing that.
  • Chris
Here's a thought: given the rash of groin/hamstring/ muscle injuries, should not the Galaxy go the way of Euro clubs and hire a strength/fitness coach? Someone whose sole job is to whip their butts into shape, and keep 'em there? I just don't here of Euro clubs suffering as many injuries as we did, and many of them play 2-3 times a week during CL season, UEFA season, etc. Just a thought...
  • More than anything I wanted it for the “kids” on the team, for Cobi, and for Cannon.

Oh, Jen, me too! That's it exactly. I'm just hoping none of the "kids" get cut before next year, so they'll get to see what it feels like to be on a real team.

Sad thing is, though, I think the Galaxy may have to sell a bunch of the good younger players to keep Landon. Randolph's salary, for one, will have to go way up. Ty Harden and Josh Tudela too.

Oh, I was on the edge of my seat hoping, just hoping. More than anything I wanted it for the "kids" on the team, for Cobi, and for Cannon. God bless Cannon. I never realized how nervous Hartman made me feel until I watched Cannon for a season. Hartman was very good. Still is. But Cannon just never makes the wrong decision. The man's positioning is as accurate as a goal-scoring Beckham free kick.

And ditto to Chris on getting a target forward. But only if he runs too. Anyone remember Hermosillo from way back? If he wasn't passed to perfectly he made little to no effort. I want a target forward who is scrappy and accurate. That's what I want.
  • Cannon was the only good player out there. THe golden boy Beckham can't even score one goal. Looks like the Galaxy wasted millions on him. Besides Cannon, the team played aweful.. Better luck next year..

Cannon was the only good player out there. THe golden boy Beckham can't even score one goal. Looks like the Galaxy wasted millions on him. Besides Cannon, the team played terribly.. Better luck next year..

The only good player out there was Cannon. THe rest of the team looked pathetic. THey deserved to lose that game.. So far it looks like the Galaxy is wasting millions on Beckham who can't even score one goal.. Pathetic..

Oops, forgot to include, once again sorry, how tired and disgusted I am with watching a crocked Beckham. Keep him in rehab until he can walk the pitch without grimacing (at least)! No ankle = no power/less accuracy/no loft no drop no "bend". So why's he playing?

As someone who came to MLS with the Beckham Effect, I want to say how much the Galaxy impressed me in their climb out of the hole. Maybe they didn't play like you've all seen before, but I really appreciated watching them fight back, with those young kids stepping up. I've already nominated Joe Cole for sainthood so the only other thing I can say, after my first MLS season, is that I wish I had been watching Cobi in more than the occasional NT match for the last 12 years.

Kenny, also another ManU graduate made the winning goal!

I'm don't think Beckham should have been playing yet. But, after almost no practice with the rest of the team, he certainly shouldn't have been played in the middle. Understandable that Yallop would use him once he was on the bench, but he should have used him on the wing where the role is clear.
  • Chris
Could not agree with Glen more! Cannon looked like Buffon out there. Stellar is an understatement. Passing was a atrocious. Very few instances where we strung any type of possession together.

Positives: Let the Healing Season begin! A new schedule, less matches per week, and a revamped lineup will serve us well. Please dump Pavon, as he proved that his 4-goal outburst in the Gold Cup was a fluke. The next ball he hustles after will be the first one. Go spenc the money and birng a target-type forward, as we already have a run-on-to-the-ball forward in LD. see ya next year!
  • Kenny
I find it ironic, that our "best player" (Beckham) is the one who set up the goal for Chicago (he passed it to a Chicago player).
F*@#$%^ Galaxy! Am I a sucker for not being able to stop supporting this team?
  • George
Yeah, we were so close, yet so far. We have a lot of talent on this team, and I am hopeful that with some time to practice and a normal schedule Galaxy will be successful next year.
  • Laurie, I hate your team, but revere as some kind of pop culture saint. Bad things do happen to good people. Great post, by the way.
  • Greybush
Today's match was a heartbreaker in two ways: being beat in stoppage time and the awful play by the team. LA could've got reamed if it were not for Joe Cannon.

It's been an interesting season. Hopefully the Galaxy will evaluate and find themselves carefully so that we can be ready for 2008. I've renewed my season tix despite this season cuz I'm looking forward to next season.

Laurie, thanks for adopting LA as your team and doing this blog.
  • JustJack
A l'Avril then? Hope everyone's busted bodies get better and fit. It was an exciting match and Cannon indeed had to work too hard. Pavon, he's still got goals on his record so the tossin' him talk, nah, don't buy it. He should have finished many more of those shots he took, but... oh well. I'm more depressed about Cobi.

Lookin' forward to 2008! I'm keepin' the Dream alive until April. :-)
  • Kyra
I'm just wondering about this because I want to know when Vancouver WhiteCaps and L.A. Galaxy is playing because I need to know now or if it's canceled I need to know. The best fricken player on L.A. Galaxy is David Beckham but everyone else already knows that hahahahahahah
  • "And what else is there to say?"

Helllooooo - next month's trip to Oz and NZ!!!!!!!

I'm feeling positive there are no Aussies or Kiwis in MLS so it would be sooo effin cool of they brought one back from their little trip down under. Maybay an ace forward who can field those Donovan/Beckham passes? Well, I don't want to get too hopeful for the Gals since I'm still rooting for my Baby Chivas. Go Goats!

    my thoughts:

    1. Cannon should be MVP, he has kept the Galaxy in a lot of games. If he had a solid defense in front of him, I'm sure he would have had a lot of shutouts this year.

    2. Galaxy could not hold the ball, horrible passes.

    3. Beckham, not in form (understandable) along with the rest of the team just not on the same page

    4. Blanco, olympic driver :)

    5. Pavon, get rid of him finally!

    6. The Galaxy made a good run at the end of the season and it's something to build from, just hopefully with out a couple of the players.
  • Dylan
Cannon was absolutely the best player out there. A world class performance. And that's too bad, as no keeper should have to deal with that much pressure for 90-some minutes. LA continue to lack passing fluency, and Chicago has it in spades. I really wanted LA to win, but the Fire put on a fantastic show (except for the disgraceful defending on set-pieces) and I feel obliged to wish them well in the playoffs.
  • Luscious
I wish Galaxy could have won. Cannon was amazing out there. You could tell he really wanted this. He was probably the best Galaxy player out there today.
  • Ian
Well, considering where you were three weeks ago, having your destiny in your own hands and being one goal away from the playoffs on the last day of the season is pretty incredible. Cannon held up great in goal, and there were a few chances, but they just didn't fall your way. Frankly, I think Chicago were the better team on the day and deserve to come out of this match and into the playoffs. Have a long, healthy off-season. Let all those groins and ankles heal, and get back out there next spring. Great run to end the season.
  • Diane
That Joe Cannon should be canonized anyway?
