Yes, Becks Will Play Tonight

By: Laurie | August 15th, 2007

I’m traveling (in LA, actually) and couldn’t get this up sooner. But it looks like David Beckham will be playing tonight.

Beckham partook in his first full training session on Tuesday with the Los Angeles Galaxy at The Home Depot Center, and afterward said he will be able to play against D.C. United on Wednesday night in the SuperLiga semifinals.

“It’s not perfect yet, but I think I can at least play half a game tomorrow,” said Beckham about his left ankle. “This is my first day of training so it still feels unstable to a certain extent, but it feels stable enough to actually play in a game and see how far I can take it.”

I guess they read our poll and saw that the fans prefer that the team concentrate on SuperLiga, eh? I’m pretty sure that’s what happened. (Although the win margin for SuperLiga was pretty low — 56%, vs. 44% who wanted the focus to be on league play. League play started out winning, but in the end the pessimists took over.)

You have no idea the mixed emotions I’m feeling over the Beckham move. On the one hand, I’m at the game! I’ll get to see Beckham!

On the other… At what cost?

Oy VEY!!! I feel the same way…I’m going to the NY match on Saturday night and even then have mixed feelings about hoping to see Beckham play. That little “hop and grimace” featured in yesterday’s training photos, following a single strike, didn’t make me think, hmmm looks like he’s 70-80%. I leaned more toward A.C. from Sideline News’: OMG! CAREFUL!
So let me just get this straight in my mind. Unless something of an ankle miracle has transpired, we now have an injured–if we’re allowed to call it that–player (they NEVER have common sense), two coach/managers who lack same, potentially 4 matches in ten days spread out over 5000 miles, and 3 REALLY long flights between, we won’t mention sleep what with the 3 time zones…did Beck’s mom go back to England too soon?

Ridiculous. Galaxy got this far in the SuperLiga without him, why risk damaging a less than 80% fit ankle? The long term benefit to the club of Beckham sitting this game out and coming back fit to play more league matches far outweighs any benefit the club gets from maybe 45 minutes of him running around in this game. On the other hand, if you’re going to be at the game, Laurie, I hope he plays. :)

I’m wondering if Becks was pressured to play by the FO or if Becks really, really wanted to play so to make up for his absence.

If it’s the former, shame on them! Let the dude heal to 100%!

If it’s latter, Becks, that’s a nice gesture and all, but dammit, heal to you’re 100%
