Galaxy Highlights vs. RSL (once you get through the Lowlights)
By: Laurie | May 4th, 2008Ignore the highlights from the first twenty minutes. After that it was watchable.
And Beckham proves once again that his right foot is worth every penny of that $6.5 million.

could the galaxy miss more chances if they tried?

I just don’t understand why subs are not being used during the second half. Is it a lack of confidence or is Ruud making some sort of point?? Fresh legs may help. Then again, as slow as they have been starting, use the subs at the begining, ha ha.

Bob, I was wondering the same thing. The guys were looking very tired by the end of the second half, and playing on that turf for 90 minutes can’t be good, especially for the over-30s.
All I can think of is that it’s a reflection of how little faith Ruud has in the second tier.

Elevation could have played a role in the Galaxy looking tired. Salt Lake City is approx: 4,300 feet, not as high as colorado ofcourse, but still enough to take a some of the fitness away in the second half. just a thought.

Donovan’s header would have sealed the deal, but RSL’s goalie was just in the right spot at the right moment, but I’m proud of how they fought back and Beckham’s goals lifted the team spirit. From the start I was afraid it was going to turn out just like it did in Colorado, but the team is showing the ability to coma from behind (just need to be out front instead of coming from behind so much) and keep their head up.

Coming from 2 goals down on that horrible excuse of a pitch was good to see. I’m happy with the result. Goal of the week for Becks?

I have to say I loved watching Gordon get back in his face. It was pretty funny and satisfying to watch.

I can’t decide who I hate more: Beckham or MLS announcers. It’s not bloody Ruud Gullet.

Come on. We’ll be needing more details than that Sam. Well except regarding the announcers, only relief there is finding a broadcast in another language.

Laurie!! Two gold Galaxy stars for me, right? I found out what Kyle Martino is up to!!
I messaged him on facebook and here was his reply:Thanks for your message. I appreciate the kind words. I am currently working with doctors to try and fix some of the injuries I have sustained while playing. For the time being I am doing color commentary for some teams around the league. Not sure if I will be able to make it back on the field. Time will tell.
Best,
KyleWhen I got his message, I felt like (after I fangirled for about five minutes) a kid running home after school with their straight A report card, bursting through the kitchen door and right up to their mom shouting “Mom, look!!”, waving it in front of their face out of sheer excitement and accomplishment. So, Laurie, look!! I found out what our favorite Kyle Martino is up to! Woo!

tiffany, thanks for sharing the info. i too, am a martino fan and was bummed that he was no longer with the galaxy. it’s good to know that he’s doing something that *totally* suits his personality. he’s so animated! i really enjoyed his antics on “david beckham’s soccer usa” last year.

Tiffany, I believe that direct communication qualifies you for at least THREE LA Galaxy Offside gold stars.
Well done!

Way to go, Tiffany! You did what all the sports writers (Yves, I’m looking at you) couldn’t do. You simply asked Kyle. What a concept!

Thinking about the questions about the subs and I’m looking at the bench players and I don’t see anyone who could bring in what the G’s needed last in the game. Ideally you bring in an attacking mid or a new forward.
Well, that means Ely Allen and Bryan Jordan. After watching them in pre-season and Allen in the first couple of games, I don’t think they would have helped. We need someone like Stuart Holden or Abe Thompson to come off the bench. We ain’t got that.
This is an MLS-wide problem brought on by the salary and roster size caps, but the G’s are especially bereft when they go to the cupboard. All those bad trades last year, but especially the Sturgis-Findley for Klein deal. I respect Klein’s grit and veteran smarts and like the way he combines on the right side, but I think we gave up way more than we got.

it’s too bad they put up two goals from Beckham (although he deserves both to be nominated) it splits the votes for him. Right now it’s 41% for goal “A” and 8% for goal “B” and Rolfe has 44%. Rolfe goal was nice but not better than either of Beckham’s class strikes. Come on people vote!!!

Box, problem is that people expect those free kicks from Beckham even though, as he mentioned, he’d been doing extra work to get them back after going into the wall several times this season. Then of course, they have also been expecting the first goal every match — no matter how many times he explains in press conferences and interviews that his job is foremost as a supplier in open play. In either case, he deserves the vote for — as Donovan appreciated — the mental toughness to change the game in those circumstances.
(Oops, should that have gone on Jen’s new page?)

thank you Diane for the explanation. i for one have never expecting Beckham to score such a goal, or any goal, from an open play in any match. even while he was still in Man U, and especially during his time in Madrid. HOPING..yes, but expecting..no. as i know that he kicks beautiful balls EVERYTIME he plays – in crossing, passing etc – but not to score. it’s not that i’m saying that he cannot score, as every football players should have been able to score anytime, even the defenders, even the GKs, and he has scored from an open play so many times..but he is an assister first and foremost..that’s why. but when he did score, he always surprises me, as i’ve never expecting him to score (from an open play), only assist.
so that’s me i think..don’t know about others. but i have to say that i don’t quite agree with the word “expecting”. i’m more to “people always ‘hoping’ him to score”..as he sure can and he kicks really beautiful balls! cheers!

and oh yeah..when Becks scored goals..his goals have never been far from stunning and beautiful. so vote for him..err..his goal! haha..cheers!

Hi Box. Oh dear, I didn’t mean to include you in what people expect — I was only talking about people, including many in the U.S. who haven’t seen Becks play a great deal or who are starter soccer fans and not familiar with the role of an accurate supplier who read the game so well. Your description of his work is perfect…when he scores its all the more fun.
You could see before his goal A that he looked for a target first and then readjusted to shoot.
