Galaxy Odds and Ends

happiness.jpgA few little things:

First off, is this not an awesome photo? It’s my new computer wallpaper, replacing this one of Becks and the kids. (Thanks, Mag!)

Second, look here! Jen and I get to tick off another minute from our fifteen minutes of fame. The answer to the questions we talked about in a previous post are now in a Toronto FC footy blog called “The Score,” which is apparently affiliated with a Canadian TV station? We have so arrived.

And last, I don’t know if any of you were following the U-23 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying. I was covering it over on The Offside’s main page, and there were a few interesting subplots. Yes, the US qualified (woohoo), but the most interesting thing about the tournament (aside from the female semi-streaker) was the defection of seven Cuban players, following in the footsteps of Chivas’ Maykel Galindo, who defected in Seattle in 2005.

For anyone who was wondering what happened next, the official Galaxy blog has the answer, at least for three of them: They’re trying out with the Galaxy. I’ve read elsewhere that getting work permits and dealing with all of the red tape that would allow them to play professionally in the US isn’t an easy thing, so no telling whether or not we’ll see them in blue and gold. But what a story, eh? And judging by the one U-23 game their keeper played, he kicks butt. He’s the one thing that kept the US from a win that day.

If I were Cronin, I might be sweating a bit. Just sayin’.

And oh, wait, one more thing. Galaxy fan and Galaxy Offside regular commenter Nathanhj has a Galaxy Supporter’s View up over on Soccer by Ives. Be sure to stop by and read his insights.

Oh and our US Women’s team just qualified. Too bad there weren’t any (male) streakers.

My thoughts exactly, Melissa. I was just getting ready to write this up over on World Cup Blog. (The Olympic qualifying part. Not the streaker part.)

Yay – I went through many hoops to get a copy of the Mexcio match and I’m still trying to find the Costa Rica one (it was on Canadian television only). From what I’ve been reading Natasha Kai was amazing and will probably be Wambach’s new strike partner. I’m looking forward to seeing some quality offense from out USWNT in Bejing (SanHo Earthquakes, take notes).

Laurie, thanks for the linkage. That’ll be a weekly feature over at SBI.

You’d think, based on what I know about the combustible combo of alcohol and testosterone, that guys could muster up at least good looking streaker at an event like the U-23 women’s qualifiers. Just to keep up, you know?

    Next time…

Folks, I distinctly said “good looking”. You don’t want the cameras to shatter as they focus in on all my glory…

No, I’m just trying to help out. I was thinking early 20’s athletic type (swimmer/futbol/lacrosse player), not late 30’s could-stand-to-lose-15-pounds type.

Amy Rodriguez on the USWNT goes to USC, where my wife is a grad student. Maybe I could get my wife to talk her into recruiting some frat guys to pull a stunt…
