Galaxy v. Wizards

By: jen | May 24th, 2008

Turns out the flu-like gunk is strep throat. Also, my internet connection on my laptop is cutting out and Mr. Techie (my husband) hasn’t figured it out yet.

So, what I was going to do was link you to some game previews. Now I’m just going to tell you to check out Mark Rogodino’s preview on the Galaxy’s site. Andrea Canales has some interesting news and videos of the guys over on sideline views.

Check those out, and I’ll be here for the game. Anyone else planning to keep me company? My HDNet signal doesn’t work during the summer months (damn trees) so I’ll have to try to watch it via internet.

Just got home from the game. Amazing. In the first five minutes we were the worst team in the league and they owned us like a dominatrix. It then slowly shifted.

Our defense remains horrible. Xavier had some astounding plays and some amazing gaffs. Franklin was disappointing. Vanney played pretty well. Klein, as usual, is not really a defender. But that one save off the goal line wipes out anything bad I ever said about him.

Pires was a waste, as usual. I want Mikey back. Beckham was great, but had a few poor plays. Allen was okay, but missed a brilliant opportunity. McDonald was good tonight.

Donovan was a powerhouse. Buddle was good. He should have scored at least one more, but Hartman had an incredible save and the other hit the crossbar. So close.

Gordon continued to be good, but not great. When they brought him in for McDonald, they pushed Donovan back into the midfield. I don’t really like him there and think he is far less useful in that role.

When they brought Ruiz on I was really excited just thinking about what a threat he can be. Also nice to have someone while Donovan is gone. Ruiz played well. He actually ran for a ball, so Gullit must be doing something to motivate these dudes.

Ah, first place and a strong showing against KC. I don’t know how this shaky a team manages to play so well, but there it is. Good night.

Bud is really coming out of his shell and letting the beast out of the jungle.

Also, it’d be silly if a national team didn’t take a player that can score from 60-out.

Another petty annoyance from Grahame Jones tonight, and I don’t know why I let his, so petty that who else cares, snipes annoy me…maybe because they get picked up and repeated everywhere? I missed the game (OF COURSE SINCE I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT HDNET IS) but in looking for press summaries, I kept reading the same sentence repeated about Beckham “hearing the crowd or teammates yelling that the net was empty before looking up and taking the shot.” Each time I thought, every footballer on earth knows who’s in the net when they receive the ball — especially if they’re staring at the keeper while marking an entire team trying to score on a set-piece (for the sake of even the most absent minded, he’s wearing an odd color), and especially a player who’s specialty is distribution and specifically knowing who is where when and where they’re headed. Then I got to Graham’s column to find that he was the original author, and my question is what’s up with the bee in his bonnet? Any thoughts?

As to general insinuations that all three goals were either stolen or gifted, did anyone who saw or attended the match have a good view of the foul for Donovan’s penalty or whether Buddle was offside? The only highlight I saw was the last goal — and I say it was great fun for fans and team whether it was heavy lifting or not.

Thanks for the comments during the game, very handy for the otherwise technologically impaired!

(for the sake of even the most absent minded, he’s wearing an odd color)

    Thanks for the giggle. :-)

I’m not sure about the Buddle goal — they never showed it from any angle but behind, but the commentators thought it could very well have been offside. I’m sure we’ll see videos popping up soon to verify or not.

Landon’s penalty looked a little soft but legit. It was not his fault that the leg was there for him to fall over. Landon may be a lot of things, but I don’t consider him a diver.

I’m with ya, Diane. Grahame Jones makes me so angry with the way he always puts a negative spin on his stories about the Galaxy. I need to write him a letter.

One thing you can say about the Galaxy – they sure know how to entertain! Nothing boring at all about how we play – and no lead is ever safe…for either team! I love our guys.

Few, glad that wasn’t too much of a petty late night rant, I ‘ll sign onto your letter, Nicole. Laurie, I REALLY laughed at bright colored keeper standing out after I saw the clip with the whole Galaxy team staring at him running up :) !

p.s. YES, 4am. My youngest daughter had a birthday party for a friend which included a dozen 16 year old boys to only four 16 year old girls — needless to say that left the boys extremely under-instructed (anyone who doesn’t have teenagers and wants to accuse me of sexism, step up now). Actually, I think the back yard ended up IN the house. I took pity on the crew sleeping over to clean and gave them a hand…and a lecture, I’m not a saint.

Nicole, I wouldn’t bother with a letter to Grahame Jones. He’s very nasty to people who disagree with him — always “I’m right and you’re an idiot for disagreeing with me.”

Much more fun to take your disagreements to other public forums, like this one.

I was there too, and agree with David we were owned in the beginning. But Pires a waste? Franklin? Nah, David musta been drinking too much, or maybe I was. I saw Pires leaving it on the grass and Franklin, while he wasn’t perfect was doing his job more often than not. Buddle just getting good? Dude, he was working as usual. Landycakes is still getting too damned much credit. For the hype he’s only now measuring up. Ruiz is still not 100% and it showed, but damn was I glad he got back on the pitch. Klein’s save off the line made me spill my beer. Course when Cronin came out of the area, I think most of it was beginning to spill anyway, dammit, that stuff’s expensive at the HDC.

Maybe it’s ’cause my seats are behind the goal that I never see Pires do much. But I do notice the other midfielders a lot. So it seems to me he isn’t as effective.

Franklin I got to see a lot. He does try hard and man can he run fast. But he is out of position a fair amount and he lets balls past. Clearly there is a weakness in our central D and I don’t see how Franklin can’t be partly responsible. Don’t get me wrong. I like the guy and I would start him. I just want him to get better.

I think Landon is on fire. In the games where he makes the difference he creates incredible opportunities. In games where he doesn’t, he draws away defenders so Buddle and others can score.

I take it back. I was looking at the roster today and I had McDonald and Pires confused. My bad. Pires has been good. McDonald less convincing.
