The Season Begins (and other bits and pieces)
By: jen | March 19th, 2009It’s Thursday and First Kick starts off tonight when Laurie’s Sounders host Dave’s Red Bulls. You can catch the game on ESPN2 at 6pm PT.
Our Galaxy, however, doesn’t play until Sunday. Zzzzzzz. I hate being amidst the hype of the season start and then not playing until Sunday, almost as if the game were an afterthought. The Galaxy will host DC United with a match time of 12pm. The game will air on FS-PT and Telefutura. I will return later to write up a game preview, including line ups, injuries, and match expectations. Nathan will actually be attending the game and will give us his “in person” perspective.
Until then, I’ll leave you with a blog post by Paul Oberjuerge, an expert (if there is one) on Landon Donovan. He discusses when, if ever, Donovan can expect to head back to Europe.
Enjoy your first look at the Sounders tonight, and I’ll be back in a bit with your Galaxy preview.

Hey Dave! I took that at the National Zoo last fall. Marc, myself, and the girls go at least once a year. She was a tired “little” kitty . . .

wow, I didn’t know Paul Oberjuerge wrote about soccer. He’s been a writer for the local Sun here in San Bernardino for years… pretty good article too.
I’m not sure why, but I’m more excited for the Sounders opener than the Galaxy one. I’ve been more and more impressed with the way they’ve been running things, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Sounders victory tonight. The Colombian strikers (Montero v. Angel) should put on a show too.
As for the Galaxy, I’m hopeful for a win on Sunday. I think Donovan is going to go off, let’s just hope that our revamped D holds on for the win…

Colin, I feel the same. I’m so excited for the Sounders!
I’d be more excited for Sunday’s game if Donovan Ricketts wasn’t injured. I saw a total of about 8 seconds of his saves from last weekend’s friendly and the man was impressive! He is tall, strong, and crazily quick! I was really looking forward to seeing him holding down the defense. Ever since Joe Canon left I get an “oh shit!” feeling when the other team is within 25 yards of our goal.

Watching the pregame. Alexi Lalas “blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.” “I live in LA and I talk to the fans . . .” Why is he even on TV? Why not John Harkes. Ugh!

hahah “talks to the fans…” He didn’t mention that most of the fans yell “Alexi sucks” when he’s anywhere near the HDC. What happened to Eric Wynalda? I missed his attitude!
And Jen, I agree about Ricketts. He looked solid against Chicago. I’m just not sure about Saunders as a backup GK. I wish we hadn’t traded Wicks away…
AND WHY COULDN’T THE GALAXY HAVE FOUND MONTERO?!?!?! He’s a beast!!!

I completely agree about Montero. Holy cow that man/boy (he’s 21) is INCREDIBLE!

The Galaxy didn’t find Fredy Montero because they weren’t looking. We haven’t needed more offense – it’s defense that we’re looking for.
And Alexi, he’s where he belongs. He was totally comfortable in front of the camera. He’s intelligent and entertaining without being a jerk (I’m looking at you, Wynalda). Lalas was a horrible GM, but I think he’s a great commentator.
And I’d love to question Garber on his comments of how the Beckham situation was handled helps the Galaxy. It may help MLS and AEG, but it doesn’t help the Galaxy. On the field. Which is what the fans care about.
And after watching that Seattle/New York game…it makes me wish I lived in Seattle.

Oh, and Paul Oberjuerge is kind of close to Donovan – as close as writers can be to an athlete that they write about. Paul’s son went to high school with LD and so Paul has pesonally known him and been watching him and following him from the very beginning. He’s written several great pieces on Donovan and gotten some excellent interviews – he often gets inside stuff from LD that no one else gets (via e-mail and cell phone and actually in his house). I always click on Paul’s site to see if he’s got some breaking news.

Well, Montero would still have been a great addition. Dump Gordon or someone. And how come they couldn’t get that defense? Honestly, Seattle looked like a European team running circles around the Red Bulls. Keller still has it, that’s for sure. Good luck at those AWAY games at Qwest field! It’ll be hard to win there. Well, I guess things can’t get worse than they were last year, so there’s literally no where to go but up. Anyone want to buy my Beckham jersey?? LoL

Yeah, Nicole! You go, girl – that’s right, sound off! Wow, I was glued to the TV-Set while watching Seattle Sounders over-take and out-match the NY Red Bulls. I wonder if the Red Bulls team may have been too tired/winded… I’m not sure how many trips or practice sessions they’ve had to endure the last couple of days – but, the Red Bulls seemed much slower than Seattle. And, the immense, incredible debut showing they had… I believe Laurie is being extremely kind and decent by not rubbing that incredible showing of the Sounders in our faces. Where’s my favorite pillow and comfort “blanky”? I’m getting the butterflies and jitters thinking about how our LA Galaxy will play this season. I just really hope we can pull off more wins than losses this season. Freddy Montero ans Oswaldo Alonso just ruled on the pitch going after most all balls and opportunities; while Brad Evans and Sebastian LeToux covered so much field yesterday.

The Sounders looked solid and played very well together. if their team can stay healthy there’s no doubt they should make it to the post season. Much faster on the ball and they closed on the Red Bulls very quickly giving them no space what so ever, very impressive. Great atmosphere at the game for ESPN2 as well.
Come on Galaxy, we need a good showing for our 1st game on Sunday, please nothing like the start of last season!

Seattle didn’t look that amazing the other day… Montero looked great but their defense looked bad in the second half. Jaqua was horrible. Luckily for Seattle the Red Bulls were god awful. When the Sounders play a good team they will look a little less like gods. I think all of us were a little hyped up by the lights and the atmosphere when we first saw them.
