Galaxy vs. Fire Preview

57617473The Los Angeles Galaxy takes on the Chicago Fire in a battle of second place teams on Friday, October 2 at 8PM. The game will be on ESPN2.

On paper this should be a tough, hard fought match between two teams that need to be peaking right now if they have hopes of going deep in the post-season. In fact, both teams are sputtering, though the Fire come in with a great road record and the Galaxy is playing at home in a season in which the Home Depot Center has felt much more like public beach than a forbidding fortress for opposing sides.

What the Galaxy need in this game is what they’ve been needing pretty much all season. Offense. That’s why there’s a picture of Edson Buddle on this posting. He needs to break free of the lockdown Columbus had him under last game and score some goals. Likewise, Landon Donovan needs to shake off the close marking he received last Saturday and make something happen. If reports from the Party Line and Nick Green are to be believed, then there’s a good chance that Landon will have some help from a healthy David Beckham. Well, Edson too for that matter.

This is important because the Fire bring in a fairly make-shift defense. Losing Bakary Soumare has had an impact and CJ Brown isn’t getting any younger. Wilman Conde certainly helps plug some gaps, but this probably isn’t the defense that Dennis Hamlett envisioned at the start of the season. And the midfield hasn’t been setting the world on fire either. Chris Rolfe has been having a subdued season, though his work rate is still high and he has learned to do a lot of dirty work. Justin Mapp is still having trouble living up to his potential and John Thorrington is injured. I love me some Logan Pause because he’s the kind of player I like to see do well in MLS. And because he went to my high school. But he’s not going to give you that offensive punch you’re looking for. And, if he plays, Cuauhtemoc Blanco won’t be at 100 percent. But you just can’t count the Fire out. They bring a solid core of players who know each other and play extremely well as a unit. And they’ve got Brian McBride back.

The Galaxy, despite a spate of injuries, is looking to field a more-or-less full strength roster on Friday. I expect to see something like this:

Ricketts
Dunivant – Berhalter – Gonzalez – Delagarza
Lewis – Birchall – Beckham – Franklin
Donovan – Buddle

I think I would prefer to see Sean Franklin at right back and Chris Klein at right mid, or even Franklin not starting at all with Klein at right mid. But I think the above is probably close to what Bruce Arena will put on the field.

I think the Donovan – Buddle combination will work pretty well, especially if Donovan is given free reign on the offense. Slashing runs in the final third will give Buddle a lot of room to operate, which he needs. And a free-range Donovan, aside from being healthier for you, will get you lots of chances.

This all depends on the Chris Birchall – David Beckham combo working well. And I think it should. Birchall has the grit to fill the middle and bust up plays and the vision to make the good pass once he has the ball. This has always been Stefani Miglioranzi’s biggest weakness, while Birchall adds some offense to the defensive midfield spot.

But, if the offense the Galaxy took to Ohio shows up at the HDC, if could be a long night.

I’m optimistic. Galaxy 2-1.

What about you all? Who do you want to see play? In what formation? Who do you think will win?

Well, DC lost and the MLS website says we are in the playoffs!!

I figured mathematically that if the other teams in contention won all their games we could still be out, but I realized they must play each other, which would make that impossible. So, we're in.

Acutally, I kind of like it now because, unlike the Galaxy commentators, these commentators aren't really Chivas USA fans, and they're calling the game from a neutral perspective.
  • George
The official blog said that if Chivas wins or draws against DC, we're in the playoffs. By the way, Kyle Martino is doing commentary for the Chivas broadcast of this game, which makes me upset.

So we are now top of the west for a day. Worst we can do in our conf is 5th place.

If DC loses tomorrow we are not quite mathematically in the playoffs but close. If Toronto loses next week too, then we are in.

1-0 final. Playoffs looking within sight.

Franklin showing a lot of rust. Kind of scary.
  • David
Gordon for Buddle. Also a good call.
  • nathanhj
Gonzalez coming up huhe in tje box.

Qustionable free kick call on touching a back pass from the feet with the keepers hands.

But the fire totally blow it by touching the ball but not following through. Heads up by Magee.

Once again Bryan Jordan makes nothing out of a golden chance in front of goal.
  • David
Running man in for Lewis. Good choice right now.
  • David
Magee in for Kleinsaucer. And two more bad passes from Beckham and a bad back pass giveaway by donovan. We still kook better.

Nice sequence from the Galaxy playing through Becks and Donovan and Klein. Smart incisive accurate passes. Capped by a pretty weak shot on goal from Franklin.
  • David
Beckham has seemed a little off most of the night. A few bad touches, some poor passes. Not bad, but not great either.of course, as I type this he hits a beautiful cross right to Lewis.

David, I agree with your assessment. First 5 min were great. Then the fire woke up and the Galaxy forgot about their midfield. Is Eddie Lewis actually playing in this game? Why is he drifting inside so much? Why not stay wide? It's not like Pause is going to beat you with speed.

And Becks needs to play higher up the field. He's not giving the team a chance to build thru the middle and let Landon get the ball at the top of the 18 facing goal when he's at his most deadly. Frustrating.

On the other hand Gonzalez is making a case for man of the match. He is really playing like a veteran and he's all over the middle of the park.

More midfield play in the second half and the Galaxy will put this game on ice.

Getting rough out there. Ref being very permissive. Birchall got a yellow for being Marty McSorely for Donovan after a rough tackle. Berhalter and McBride had some words. I kinda imagine Berhalter laying it down to McBride: "This aint no national team, son and you aint no captain America on my pitch, b--ch."
  • nathanhj
Goal! Landon Donovan! On a nice breakaway on the counter. Nothing Busch could do. Landon too fast and strong for the defense.
  • David
OG looking great in the back. First time I've seen Birchall live and I like him. Dude is built like a brick. Reminds me of Franchino but with better ball skills. But the offense still looks anemic. Right now we are the better team, but it's tenuous.
  • nathanhj
Klein has now missed two point blank shots - both right at Busch. Aargh.
  • nathanhj
First 5 minutes and the Galaxy lok really good. Crisp passes, first to the ball, calm smart play and a few dangerous situations. Nice. Keep it up for 90.
  • nathanhj
Did not predict Dunivant being sat out. But I like this line up. This could actually score goals.

    Lineup

    Rickettes
Delagarza- Berhalter - Gonzalez - Franklin
Lewis- Birchall - Beckham - Klein
    Donovan - Buddle

Won some tix at the last fan watching party and am only 12 rows from the field in section 130.

Normally I'm in 232 so being this close is novel. But I won't see as many of the plays develop. On the other hand I'll be able to hear the players on the field, so that's cool.
  • George
From what I've read on the official blog, it seems like Kovalenko might be able to start tonight. We could really use him.
  • Colin
Nathan, spot on with your projected lineup. I too would rather see Klein in there than Franklin, but it could be worse (see: Ely Allen, circa 2008). If Franklin can be a little more assertive and aggressive offensively, he could do well.

I'll be at the game (section 131), and hopefully your score prediction is accurate. We NEED this win!
