Season Ticket Holder Ranting

By: NathanHJ | September 10th, 2008

The Galaxy has recently reorganized their customer service teams to create a new team dedicated just to serving season ticket holders, of which I am one. My new rep has taken the time to introduce himself to me and this got me thinking about whether or not I’d be willing to shell out a serious (for me) amount of cash for next year, given the recent history of this team. I’m wondering whether the cost is worth the benefits.

When things go well on the field, the tendency for other things to rankle is lessened. When things go badly on the field, the rest of the Galaxy game experience gets put under the microscope. We are nearing the end of the season and the team has to put together a run just like they did last year in order to have a hope of qualifying for the playoffs. If not, they will be out for a record-setting third year in a row. Regardless of how that shakes out, the team is currently in the middle of a record-setting winless streak.

These issues have been exacerbated by the League scheduling inanity. This past weekend was a debacle. Not only are teams missing key starters in the final thrid of the season due to call-ups (37 MLS players in total), but teams like the Galaxy were missing players who completely change the complexion of their teams. Pity poor Toronto missing 9 of their starters in a home game against a Chivas team with a raft of injuries. Wouldn’t they have liked to face that game at full-strength? And the G’s were facing RSL which to that point only had taken 4 points from away games. We needed the full three, especially at home.

So: Poor performance on the field (and I could write more about that, but, then, I already have in numerous blog postings which can be found at Soccer By Ives). Crap scheduling by MLS. Add to that, the fact that last year, the team used up all its “bonus games” and this year it has used just one (unless I missed one while I was out of town, which is totally possible). So I’m essentially paying more this year for each one of my MLS games than I did last year and getting just as crap a performance.

What does all that add up to? Questions about renewing season tickets for next year. If the team isn’t commited to dealing with two issues, then I’m probably not going to invest in season tickets again.

First, fill out the full contingent of bonus games. I realize these games aren’t guaranteed. That’s the nature of “bonus”. But last year I saw Chelsea (a preseason, undermanned, not in form Chelsea, but Chelsea nonetheless). I saw Pachuca. Twice. Hell I even saw Steve Cronin make like 12 saves in a US Open Cup match. This year I saw… a crap US Open loss.

Second, don’t raise the prices of season tickets for next year. It would be the height of fan abuse to make us sit through two garbage seasons and then raise the ticket price, especially when it is pretty clear the team in making a mint off of jersey sales, touring Asia, and the wretched, wretched Pan-Pacific Championship (can we please just kill that now – it is nothing but excrement masquerading as futbol). Related to that is, don’t raise the cost of parking again. It was $10 when I first watched games at the HDC as a visitor to LA, then when I bought my first season tickets it was $15 and I’ve paid as much as $20 for certain games. I can spend just as much someplace else where I don’t have to drive 23 miles to get to and where the beer doesn’t cost $12 and I can watch the game on TV.

In the past two years, of all the home games on offer, I’ve only missed three and that was because I had to be gone for work. I arrange my schedule around Galaxy games. I love the fact that we have Becks. I love watching him and Landon and Edson kick ass. I love the Eddie Lewis acquisition (glad that the Cory Gibbs deal never happened).

But I don’t think I can do a third year of this if the front office doesn’t take the fans into consideration. I’ll probably just buy the occasional single game ticket and mostly just watch the games over the internet or at a friend’s house with cable.

Let me end on a somewhat positive note. I’ve always had great interactions with the sales team. They are responsive, give as much information as they have available to them, and are always willing to listen to the concerns of fans like me. I appreciate that and I appreciate that the Galaxy takes this seriously. Further I’m excited to see what Bruce Arena can do both in terms of coaching, but also in terms of personnel trades since we are woefully inadequate in the midfield. Given the parity in MLS, I think we could be two midfielders and a defender away from winning an MLS Cup and I’d like to be in the stands to watch it all unfold.

But not if the suits in the suites decide I’m better as an ATM than a fan.

What do you guys think? Do I have a leg to stand on here? Should I shut up and just not buy tickets, or suck it up and make the investment? Does the Galaxy have an obligation to fans to make the playoffs before raising prices again? Is the overall experience of being at the stadium worth the investment in season tickets or multi-game packages even if prices rise? What do you think of watching at the HDC versus TV or the internet? Share your thoughts below.

I think you being a baby, in every league in every sport teams go through bad years, the question here is are AEG trying to right the wrong, Lalas-gone, a coach that didn’t care about the league-gone, MLS talking about changing the way they do the schedule-yes. The league is so young and things will get fixed. I am also a season ticket holder and I already put money down for next season. I know it sucks when we lose and you feel shitty but its a game and someone must lose, AEG f’ed up trying to have 3 big ticket players taking up half the salary it clearly did not work but next season the cap might go up, we will be able to let some more costly guys go, keep bringing in some young talent and let them get some time playing. Bowen from the Rios is going to be good for us and I think Bruce was a great choice. Just my opinion on it all but I believe sticking with my team through thick and thin, if its a money thing then don’t re up its just a better seat for me ;) lol

Baby, huh? Interesting. Haven’t been called that in decades. Guess I was due.

I wish to be clear that I understand that not winning is part of sports. I think that having shelled out cash for the past two seasons indicates how I feel about that.

What I don’t want is for AEG to say, “Hey, we’re making improvements, so you should be willing to cough up more cash.” Because they can say that they are making improvements every year. They said it last year and at the beginning of this year.

But its not just that the overall Galaxy team has sunk to historic lows. It is that there were problems with bonus games this year and that MLS as a league has totally screwed itself with the scheduling.

I realize the league is young and still improving and figuring out how to build on its recent success. One of the reasons I like MLS is because I see it trying very hard to get better and I see the product on the field get better year over year.

But I’m not confident they are going to actually figure this schedule thing out. And in the meantime I pay full price to see the B team. Repeatedly. And its going to happen twice more down the stretch, just at the time when the G’s need their best players. This simply cheapens the experience.

Again, I understand that sports is sports. One reason we watch is to see what happens, which could be anything. Goals. Injuries. Unexpected standout performances. It’s all good.

But what sucks is that the schedule is a thing of the League’s own making, yet I’m supposed to think that the product on the field is the same as when those 37 players are actually playing for their clubs.

Pah. I know I’m whining a bit, but that’s sports, too, right? In the end, I’m making what is a significant investment for me in this team. I’d like to see that respected by a club that has lost its way for the past three years.

Well with Walcott’s game today (hat trick) I am not too sure Becks will be missing any more games. I think it is time that England turns to some of its youth and Walcott is one hell of a player. I agree that the scheduling sucks and the team(s) are not the same during national dates, but both times we got a draw, if we would have had a coach that concentrated on defense through out the year and a GM that didn’t go get Ruiz to waste more of our money we would prolly not be chasing the playoffs and those two ties would have been great for us. The MLS needs to up the roster sizes and also the salary cap.

If there are no bonus games this year (if we do not make the playoffs) you will get credited cash for those games, if we make the playoffs you have tickets. Now I know people will say playoff tickets should be in the season tickets not bonus games but in the other sports here you have to buy playoff packages separate so… I will take the credit and put it towards next seasons tickets or I will gladly take the playoff games.

I can definitely see it both ways. Sure, every team is going to have its down years, and as fans we should understand that and support them through thick and thin. But supporting doesn’t necessarily mean getting bent over by AEG every season and spending thousands on a mediocre team.

As far as scheduling goes, I hate watching the games when our 3 to 4 best players are gone on int’l duty. MLS teams shouldn’t be ‘punished’ by MLS for having quality players who play for their national teams. Rather, it would make sense to try to work around the international games as best as possible. If fans are coming to the games/watching the games on TV to see Donovan, Beckham, etc., why would you schedule a game (especially since the HDC is AEG property) when those marquee players are going to be gone?

It’s the equivalent of paying top dollar for concert tickets, to say, Bruce Springsteen, only to find out that Bruce isn’t going to play due to a scheduling conflict, and all you get is the drummer Max Weinberg from the Conan O’Brien show. It feels like you’re getting ripped off.

    Limey,

You are probably correct in what’s going to happen. I have to admit that I enjoy MLS games more often than not.

And, oh yes, the parking is horrendous.

I agree that a lot has transpired to sour me, as a season ticket holder, but I am willing to stick it out for another go, as I am a football fan at heart and would rather be at the game than watch it on TV. If they credit us for the missing bonus games (if we miss the playoffs) I can be OK with that. As I understand it, some games they had anticipated using for this purpose did not materialize. But please, please, please do something about the food at the HDC. Quite frankly the concessions are the most horrible I have ever experienced at a sports venue. By the end of the game I am starved and sprinting to the parking lot for a hot dog vendor. If the concessions vendor can’t figure out a way to serve us something cooked the same day, hire those couples in the parking lot to serve FRESH bacon-wrapped dogs. And I agree about the parking. Next season they may have Red Cross attendants waiting to pull a pint along with my $15-$20. Who’s managing the parking? Frank McCourt?

I came into the HDC with my daughter last week and set off the xray machine. The attendent said (without even looking at me) “go over there so he can wand you”. I had my cellphone and keys on the little table by her so i asked if i should leave them there or pick them up, she answered (again without looking) “I don’t care”. Just another example of the HDC experience.

What do you expect with temp agency staffing?

Oh, and FYI: Steven Goff from the Washington Post mentioned in his column about Landon Donovan to Bayern Munich discussions with MLS. I frankly think that if he was to go anywhere outside of the US (which I hope he doesn’t), it’s England (and Newcastle, for that matter).

I’m out next year. I managed to talk my wife into a second year for this year but they haven’t given me any amunition to try for another year it’s been so painful and for the MLS to screw up the international periods shows that they don’t care much about the fans.

That would be awesome if they credited us for the bonus games. Ditto the comments about the services. The ticket reps are amazing and extremely cordial and accommodating. The HDC staff sucks. Really bad. I absolutely wait to eat with my cash for those amazing hot dogs in the parking lot. I only buy a drink (water or soda) that takes like 15 minutes for some odd reason. The “security” people are rude as well. Parking has improved from last year, but I don’t think any sporting event has a “good” parking situation, unless you have a team with no attendance. I will renew, because I love the game and my team, for better or for worse. I am excited about Arena, and I love Lewis as a player, just wish it was at least 5 years ago……

I agree with some of your points. I was a galaxy ticket holder. But I switched to chivas u.s.a after going to one of their games. I think that the galaxuy suits took the whole becks thing to the extreme by raising ticket prices like crazy.

I want to sell my season tickets this season …6th row, section 134. I have two tickets, price is $80 per seat. I get them for cheaper …What is a fair price? …or should I just give them up?
