Former Galaxy Guys — Where Are They Now?
By: jen | May 20th, 2009
Ever wonder what happened to the guys from long ago? Yeah, me too, but that will take a little more digging. Until then, here’s the latest on the latest former Galaxy guys.
After training with Seattle Sounders FC in the preseason, Ely Allen is now playing for USL’s (Premier Development League) Seattle Wolves FC. To date he has played in four matches and has recorded an impressive 2 goals and 2 assists. With more consistency, could he make it back to MLS?
Josh Wicks was signed by DC United in the off season and started the first two games of the season. He is currently one of three keepers who seem to be on a merry-go-round of starting line ups for DC. None of DC’s three keepers (Louis Crayton, Milos Kocic, and Wicks) have impressed Tom Soehn enough to earn the starting position. It’s a problem the Galaxy suffered last year, and I’m glad to be rid of!
Meanwhile, former Galaxy starting keeper Steve Cronin is the starting keeper for the USL First Division’s Portland Timbers. Perhaps he can make a case for remaining with the team when they join the ranks of MLS.
In Paraguay El Pescadito, Carlos Ruiz, is continuing to impress with his new club Olimpia Asuncion.
“If this doesn’t work out Ely, you could get work on Meerkat Manor.”
Laurie’s former love, Kyle Martino, is living in New York and working for Lenox Advisors while providing the occasional commentary for MLS matches on ESPN. I have to admit that I miss the guy. Not his playing so much as his entertaining personality.
Finally, after a brief trade to DC United and an appearance in 10 games, Quavas Kirk is now playing for the Minnesota Thunder in USL’s First Division. (A bit of trivia — Tony Sanneh was inducted into the Minnesota Thunder Hall of Fame in 1996.)
Does anyone have news on any other former Galaxy guys? Drop me a line at lagalaxy (dot) theoffside (dot) com.

Great post Jen! Despite my dislike for most of the guys you mentioned (minus hometown legend Josh Wicks and Kyle Martino), I’m glad to see that no one is on Skid Row or something…
I definitely think the Galaxy made a mistake in letting Wicks go, and Kyle Martino would be awesome back in a Galaxy uniform or at least as a commentator on the FSN broadcasts!

When someone I work with recently found out that I was a Galaxy fan, she told me that her sister is good friends with someone on the team. “Who?” I immediately asked. “A guy named Steve–he’s a goalie. We had lunch with him and his girlfriend last year, and he’s really nice.” I had to break the bad news that he wasn’t with the team anymore.
One player you left out–Cornell Glen. Will forever be a favorite of mine for scoring 2 in his debut, against Chivas USA to win 2-1, no less. Played for T&T in the World Cup, where he did well, but always had bad luck with injuries and didn’t play after coming back. He was released, played in Trinidad, and went on a trial with Leeds, but didn’t get picked up. He’s with San Jose now, and I wish him the best luck.

I definately think they should bring back Cronin. It wasn’t him who was lacking, it was the defense.

Carlos Pavon is playing with Necaxa, who got relegated to the Mexican second division this season.

Thanks for the updates. It’s interesting how many former players have left MLS.

I think Tony Sanneh will retire from professional soccer after this season.. Time to go, i guess.
He also isn’t able to shoot goals anymore..
