Galaxy to Head to Sydney. Yes, Australia.
By: Laurie | July 3rd, 2007
Remember just a few days ago when I was complaining about the Galaxy’s overcrowded schedule?
Well, it’s apparently not crowded enough, because the Gals are now headed to Sydney, Australia, to play against Sydney FC on November 27.
“The match at Telstra Stadium, certain to be a sell-out, will be the centrepiece of a visit to Sydney by the world’s most famous footballer’s new club, LA Galaxy, and the Beckham entourage.
Beckham’s wife Victoria – a.k.a. Posh Spice – may also visit however it was unclear last night whether she would have time in the lead up to her Spice Girls tour early next year. Stringent security concerns mean Beckham’s precise itinerary is a secret, but the 40-strong Galaxy party will be here for several days and at least one public appearance is scheduled.”
Well, at least they waited till after the playoffs for this one. But I guess with the arrival of Beckham there will be no such thing as an off-season. I hope they’re at least paying to take the Galaxy guys’ families for a little fun and sun.
One interesting tidbit:
Negotiations to secure the visit took weeks, complicated by three-way exchanges of documents between FFA headquarters in Sydney, Galaxy and Beckham’s advisers in London.
Wonder if Landon’s a bit bent out of shape that nobody consulted his advisers?

They did consult his advisers – and Bianca said it was okay.

But you can’t find a decent hamburger in the whole place.

By the time the Galaxy’s season is over, Beckham will have played four professional seasons in a row (counting the World Cup), with maybe two week breaks in between; we’re only hoping that his ankle is fully fit going into his Galaxy season; no matter what he’s getting paid for it, he’s still going to be working a second promotional job for MLS in addition to what he’ll be putting into the season with the rest of his team; and England’s last Euro 2008 qualifier is November 21st. Even though the guy admits to having trouble sitting still and is fairly game, that’s a pretty steady clip.
If, as the article says, the deal is contingent on Beckham traveling with the Galaxy, if I were them I would consult with everyone and three augers before I promised him that week.
Love him or hate him, we can’t forget that Beckham is going to be flogged to the hilt (in promotional terms those of you whose sick minds wandered) by the Galaxy and even if that gives him a different role, he’s still a member of the team so we should probably be as worried about him burning out as any of the other players. All of whom I am worried about at all times, btw.

(Did I break a record for saying the word “season” in one paragraph?)
