What the Brits Think We Say

By: Laurie | September 21st, 2007

Another one of those interesting “let’s translate MLS terminology for the rest of the world” articles from the UK. (Scroll down — it’s about mid-post.)

Some of these made me laugh. Seriously, have you ever heard anybody say, “Knock like a bear kiss“? It supposedly means, “when a tackle is more clumsy than dangerous, and appears to be worse than it actually was.”

Or “WASTEBASKET – A phrase often used to describe a pass that goes out of play.”

“Often used”? I’m glad they told me this, because somehow it had slipped by me without registering. Now that I know it’s what we say, I’ll use it all the time.

Some of it is actually interesting. Such as, if you don’t call one-touch passes “one-touch,” what do you call them? And why wouldn’t you call penalty kicks “PKs“?

Mostly, though, I think they’ve been listening too much to Eric Wynalda. Seriously, can’t you just hear him saying all of these things?

A few more:

Tackling

CHICKEN WING BATTLE – The phrase used to describe a tussle between players, in which there is excessive use of arms and elbows.
TAKEAWAY - The term used to describe when a player makes an interception or tackle, and comes away with the ball.
BULLDOGGING – The phrase used to describe when a player shows determination to win the ball back.
KNOCK LIKE A BEAR KISS – The phrase used to describe when a tackle is more clumsy than dangerous, and appears to be worse than it actually was.

Bonus points for the first one to use these in a complete sentence.

Hilarious glossary those Brits provided... they're missing Tommy's goofy, "onion bag" thing... I lived in Glasgow for 5 years and never once heard that term used. The rest of 'em in the list... I don't recognize either... but I watch with the sound off because I can't stand 'Merkaan commentators (who mostly don't know the game anyway, Eric included!)

Hmmmm.... sounds like crazy things Ray Hudson would say.
  • Sean, I'll give you partial bonus points. Three out of four. But I still think that with a little creativity you could insert a bear kiss somewhere.

Hmm. That sounds kind of icky, doesn't it?
  • "Armas' bulldogging of Toja led to a brief chicken wing battle; the Fire captain owed his takeaway more to his elbows than his feet."

    Or something.

'Knock like a bear kiss' is just unusable. Heh.
