It’s A Sad Day When I’d Rather Talk about the Spice Girls than the Galaxy
By: Laurie | June 27th, 2007There is apparently nothing happening in Galaxyland right now. Maybe everybody who writes on the team is just too depressed. Okay, yes, so LA Soccer News has a couple of articles. In one, Alexi Lalas utters the dreaded Words O’ Death: “I have complete and utter faith in Frank.”
Uh-oh, Frank. Complete and utter faith. Watch your back.
And the other is about Landon Donovan and is entitled, “Conquering Hero Returns.” Which for some reason my sun-addled brain read as “Conquering Hetero Returns.” What do you think this means?
But at any rate. With no actual Galaxy news, this would seem to be a good day to spend talking about the Beckhams. Am I right? Because I do have all kind of exciting Beckham news, including the fact that the Spice Girls are coming back. I know, I know. I’m thrilled too.
The Spice Girls are to announce plans for the most profitable reunion in pop history - with a raft of business deals set to make them some £60 million. The five, Britain’s most successful ever girl group, are set to pocket £12 million a piece to reform with plans including a world tour starting at the end of the year…
There will be a lot less leaping around the stage of course. The girls were always a triumph of show over substance, and the dance routines were key. Now they will have to rely a lot more on the singing, something which will no doubt be galling for them and their managers…
Fuller is understood to have masterminded a string of licensing deals ensuring the girls’ new image will appear on everything from pencil cases to crisp packets and bubble bath. Ringtones are also a lucrative area.
Because what would get us through the day if not the thought of our nightly Spice Girls bubble bath?

Hey, found your blog through the soccerpubs.com message boards. Good stuff about giving MLS a chance even if it’s not up to snuff with Europe. Looks like you really are getting into it.

Greybush, if you happen to stop by here, maybe you can explain how you found me through Soccerpubs.com? What’s the connection?

My children are stalking me so its a good day to divert myself by commenting on Laurie’s generous diversions:
1) Girl Power was reasonably cute (as marketing gimmicks went at the time) when the spices were girls, they’re not. Simon Fuller is REALLY scary, maybe more than Tom Cruise, money worship, spaceship worship…probably the first hurts more people everywhere, but who knows…either way YIKES =[
I have to go check the next diverting post to see if there’s a #2.

Thanks, Greybush. WordPress is supposed to show incoming links, but it hasn’t updated for awhile now and these were new to me.
(And WHEW. Nobody’s said anything derogatory yet. Other than pointing out my fascination with French players whose names start with Z. Which isn’t derogatory — it’s merely factual. Curse these XX chromosomes!)

Diane, I’m with you. When the girls start having girls (and boys) of their own, it’s no longer cute. I’m kind of seeing this trainwreck-style, Peter Paul & Mary thing coming up. Except that Spice Girls were always all about packaging and never about music.
But I could be wrong.
