Lost in Translation: A Polish Link about Zurawski

By: Laurie | December 10th, 2007

I got an interesting incoming link today from the Polish website PolSport about the potential Maciej Żurawski transfer. I don’t speak a word of Polish, but I found my name and “The Offside” and what seems to be my list of criteria for a player to be linked to the Galaxy. And they also seem to be having a bit of fun with English speakers’ difficulty with Polish pronunciation.

I did run it through an online translator, which is even more humorous going from Polish to English than it is when I do French. Want to take a look? This is fun. First, grab a glass of wine, then let’s read it together.

Okay. Are you ready? Here’s the online translation. No, really.

Something of Laurel on bank The Offside instruction too wikipedią , that Matcze eh ZHuravskee ( Scotsmen shares yourselves homelike utterance : Warlocks Zooravski ). Laurel przeprowadza too summary test , who ascertains it , that transference Clearing is not very much so probable : 1. strongCzy is not ex Europe? / bank Krotka consultation on necie permits make , that Poland , yes leży on Europe. 2. strongCzy finitely lat? / bank Very much so. Ważne question , younger since impossibility is not tempt to MLS. 3. strongCzy be situated currently to turn careers transitional phase of his caret )? strongOwszem , is not sfrustrowany failures plays on prime warehouse Celt. All three spot yourselves That’s right! Takes guy! writes Laurel /

Okay, Polish speakers. Here’s the actual text. Tell us what it really says!

3. Czy znajduje się aktualnie na zakręcie kariery (transitional phase of his career)? Owszem, jest sfrustrowany brakiem gry w pierwszym składzie Celticu.

Wszystkie trzy punkty się zgadzają! Bierzemy faceta! – pisze Laurie.

It's just there to show Galaxy fans would welcome the move.

The Polish fans just want Zurawski to be in form for Euro 2008 so there is a lot of bickering over what club he should go to, and some people question whether he should even be playing for Poland.

If this rumor only appeared in the Polish media I would ignore it as they like to make outrageous claims.
  • They don't take me too seriously, though, do they? Taking me seriously is always a bad thing.
  • Thanks, D! :-) Pretty much what I thought.

"Rumours of the transfer reached Galaxy. Firstly, fans are wondering how to pronounce the name of the potential new star. Some Laurie in a page called The Offside is instructed by Wikipedia that it's Match-eh ZHuravskee (The Scots share their pronunciation: Magic Zooravski). Laurie performs a small test that confirms the transfer of the Pole is very likely:

    ...

All tree criteria are met. We'll take the guy! - says Laurie"
