Pravda Tells Us About Beckham and the Blue Jays
By: Laurie | August 7th, 2007Show of hands, kids! Who remembers the Cold War? And who remembers Pravda, the official Cold War-era mouthpiece of The Evil Soviet Empire?
Oh, I do! I do!
Yes, I am that old. (I even own a CCCP jacket that once belonged to one of the athletes at the 1990 Goodwill Games — the last time they competed under the letters CCCP.)
So it was with much amusement that I found this link to a Pravda article on David Beckham and the Galaxy guys taking a trip to the Toronto Blue Jays’ clubhouse. Beckham got a Blue Jay jersey with his name and the number 23 on the back, and then Canadians Ante Jazic and Kevin Harmse threw out the ceremonial first pitches. They were joined by Landon Donovan, Abel Xavier, Frank Yallop and Joe Cannon.
That’s not the amusing part, though. The amusing part is when you click on the main Pravda page and see all the other things they choose to write about our own good ol’ US of A. Among the headlines:
“United State to Claim Arctic Seabed ‘As Large as they Can’”
“Minneapolis Bridge Collapses During Rush Hour,”
and my personal favorite, “NASA Employs Drunkards and Saboteurs.”
(Hmm. My brother works at NASA. Wonder which category he falls into?)
I guess the more things change, the more they really do stay the same.
And I can’t leave this page without sharing the Pravda Readers’ Top Stories:
“Earth to go splat on Sun like Bugs on Windshield,”
“Act of love can be much better with shot of vodka,” and of course
“Russian government hides Caspian monsters. Why?”
Ah, Pravda in English, online. I hadn’t realized until this moment what was missing from my life.
