Lalas (Finally) Speaks Up About the Schedule

By: Laurie | August 28th, 2007

Alexi Lalas has apparently realized, at last, that this schedule is not a good thing. According to Times Online, he said:

“We sure as hell are not going to put up with another season like this,” Lalas said. “This ridiculous schedule that we have been saddled with in an effort to appease everybody, on and off the field, has taken its toll.

We have bent over backwards to help everybody but the Galaxy. A lot of people have made a tremendous amount of money on the back of what the Galaxy, with David, has brought to their markets this year and I hope that they remember that. The travelling, the number of games, the lack of consistent scheduling – no other team has had to put up with that.”

Yup. And the only one as guilty as the MLS schedulers for this debacle might be the manager who packed the team with players over thirty who are, by definition, more prone to injury.

And who would that be again?

I'm thinking Yallop is Patrick Doyle reincarnated and Lalas is like Phil Wallis... ah shit I watched too much of that Dream Team Brit soapy stuff.

Lalas was on ESPN before the Chelsea-LA friendly and he said he personally rearranged the scheudle for Beckham (like it was a good thing and it was all his idea). How soon we forget when machismo and butt-kissin' is the m.o.

Tim Liewiecke (corporate head of AEG) is responsible for the rule that brought David Beckham here. I think he was even the chief vontract negotiater.

Alexi Lalas is responcible for the Bob Bradley headed Metrostars floundering (whereas Bradley's Fire and Chivas did well enough, but NY tends to do that to everyone so I'm not sure how much was Lalas, ask the metro people I'm DC) and for the hatchet job that was behind the scenes San Jose 2005. The question is not how people could think about having AEG let him go but why AEG keeps bouncing him from team to team and when they'll say enough.

If firing Lalas is even talked about, i'd have to question my own job security. Lalas is almost single handedly responsible for the rule allowing Beckham and others to come here. I understand business is business but maybe give the guy another (normal) year. As for Yallop, maybe having Klinnsman would be more suitable but he also is under enormous pressure to play the money maker and the only reason theres pressure is cause american fans are being completely unfair, i'm going to refrain from insulting us all even though we should be. DB shouldn't have even started till next season.

I refuse to believe Lalas was not complicit in the schedule. He's done everything possible to place himself in the spotlight during this whole Beckham debacle and made consistently lousy decisions regarding the management of the club.

I'd be livid if I were a Galaxy supporter, but as a DCU fan, I just sit back and laugh.

How soon will Lalas and Yallop be fired?
  • I have always been curious as to who was the driving force behind the World Series of Football. Was that an AEG thing?

Of course it is not MLS's fault that the Galaxy decided to augment a tight schedule with multiple friendlies and a world series of soccer to exaccerbate the problems. I would think that one might fall on the GM.

I hear his argument, but he knew about the schedule LOOOONG ago. Why come out now and complain? Oh wait I know, it is because everyone is mentioning how crappy of a GM you are so now you are trying to deflect the blame onto the schedule.

Classy move Lalas. You put together a crap roster and now you want to complain about the schedule. You probably should have said something when the schedule was released...months ago.

Awesome site; maybe more Milan news than Roma news but oh well...

As much as I want Lalas to excel I think he needs more exposure at the low-to-mid level management jobs within MLS before taking such big reins as the GM slot.

    I'm not saying...just saying.
