2007 Galaxy Salaries Revealed

By: Laurie | May 4th, 2007

The 2007 MLS salary schedule has been released, and it’s again not pretty. (Just be glad you’re not trying to make a living as a soccer agent. You’d get pennies on pennies.)

It’s funny. It’s one thing to hear, out of context, that David Beckham’s salary is $5.5 million. It’s another thing to see it in the context of this list. Becks, you’d better deliver!

Also interesting:
Cobi Jones took a substantial pay cut to continue playing this year. From $180,000 (with bonus, $210,000) to $95,000 with no bonus.
Ty Harden was a steal. If I’m not mistaken, he’s played every single second of every game so far this year, and all for an annual salary of $17,700. No bonus. I am outraged on his behalf.
Landon Donovan didn’t get a raise this year and is being paid exactly the same as last year.
– It’s funny that David Beckham’s salary is the one of the few with pennies listed. As in, base salary $5,500,000.08, with bonuses $6,500,000.04. Because without those pennies, folks, no deal!

But at any rate, here are the 2007 salaries. First column is base salary, second includes guaranteed bonuses. For comparison purposes, here is the 2006 list.

Chris Albright, $142,500; $142,500
David Beckham, $5,500,000, $6,500,000
Joe Cannon, $192,000, $192,000
Steve Cronin, $34728.75; $42,228.75
Landon Donovan, $900,000; $900,000
Robbie Findley, $36,000; 48,5000
Lance Friesz, $12,900; $12,900
Gavin Glinton, $50,000; $50,000
Alan Gordon, $30,870; $30,870
Ty Harden, $17,700; $17,700
Kevin Harmse, $40,800; $40,800
Nate Jaqua, $112,500; $119,525
Ante Jazic, $108,000; $114,250
Cobi Jones, $95,000; $95,000
Quavas Kirk, $75,000; $111,500
Tyrone Marshall, $142,000; $149,500
Kyle Martino, $52,500; $55,297.27
Santino Quaranta, $100,000; $105,312.50

Hopefully some of those guys have wives who can help them out with things like buying $28,000 watches.

They’d probably settle for things like $4.99 laundry detergent. Or a six-pack of generic beer.

It would seem that you guys actually pay your players….that is not really the same thing for chivas.

Whoa, David, you’re not kidding! Doesn’t look like your team has had any problems making the salary cap!

At least with Guevara gone that should free up some bucks, eh?

Oh man, I never thought I’d see the day when I earned more than a footballer.

Ouch, some of the salaries are below the national poverty line! I hope Ty Harden doesn’t have kids, or he might have to go on welfare.

And here I thought that the French league was cheap…

Ah, these guys are living their dream. And it’s not like they put in a 40-hour work week. What, they show up at, like, 9:00, 9:30, get done by about 1:30 or so? Plus they get to travel all over the country.

And as Dan Loney said in his blog – if they don’t think they’re getting paid enough, then they have the option to get better so they can demand better pay.

As I said, they’re living their dream – to play professional soccer. With the promise of some day making it big and making big bucks. I’d do it in a heart beat if I had the talent.

Lane, I don’t necessarily disagree with you until we hit the bottom end of the pay scale. For the amount of time these guys have put into developing their skills just to get to this point, it seems to me that something like $35,000 should be the absolute minimum for a first-year player. Incentive to improve, sure, but I don’t think they should have to take second and third jobs just to survive!

@Laurie: Exactly! Why are these guys taking this? Pay Beckham, 6.3mil and use the 200 grand to get those guys some decent salaries. (CNN is saying Beckham stands to make up to $250 million if you count endorsements, criminal if you see the other salaries.)

I think that this is absolutly outragious. The lowest salary is 12,900, and the biggest is beckham with 6.5 mill. A person can hardely live off 12,900, but you can feed thousands of people for beckhams pay. wtf is this
