A Few Iotas of News of the Minnesota-Galaxy Game
By: Laurie | November 12th, 2007What I really wanted to know about the Minnesota-Galaxy game had nothing to do with David Beckham. I wanted to know if my favorite French player in the US, Seattle Sounder Sebastien Le Toux, managed to score.
You have no idea how difficult it was to find this information when all anybody wanted to tell me was that Edson Buddle scored off a Beckham free kick. And that the Galaxy somehow won on penalties (penalties?!?!?), either 4-3, 3-2 or 2-1. (Yes, I’ve read all three scores on various sites. I still have no idea which is correct, but I think it’s 3-2.)
I later discovered that it went to penalties because, for some reason, this was the Copa Minnesota (whatever that means) and Copas do penalties.
But anyhoo. I’m thrilled for Buddle and thrilled for Beckham, yada, yada. But I was more thrilled to finally discover that yes, my boy Sebastien DID get a goal in the 47th minute. Woohoo! You have no idea how much I want this player for the Galaxy. (And barring that, I want him to hang around in the Seattle USL next year just waiting for the Sounders to become an MLS team in 2009. Think that will happen?)
From TwinCities.com:
The game? Oh yeah, that Beckham guy can play soccer, too. On the game’s first goal off a free kick in the eighth minute, he bent it like Beckham to teammate Edson Buddle in the eighth minute. The Thunder tied it in the 47th minute on a goal by Sebastien Letoux. Los Angeles claimed the inaugural Copa title with a 3-2 edge in the shootout.
I tried a couple of times to listen to the game, but all the audio site would give me was what sounded like crowd noise in the stands. It apparently allowed only The Chosen Ones to actually hear commentary, and I was not Chosen. Faithful Galaxy Offsider reader George was, though, and he tells us:
Penalty Kicks:
-Troy Roberts scored the game-winning PK.
-Pavon and Veris missed
-Steve Cronin saved 3 (MLSnet says 2) of the 5 PK’s
So there you have it. You now know all I know about this game.

Any word on wether the Oz/NZ games will be televised here?
Also, is someone playing a cruel joke or did Kickette just get hacked?

I came across a picture of one of the Timbers defenders playing for Minnesota so I tried to find a box score for the game. It was easier to find the secret White House plans to attack Iran.
And yes Melissa, it looks like Kickette has been hacked. Hopefully there are no breaking news fashion tragedies while the site is down.

From someone who was there, the final on PKs was 3-2 and Cronin did make three saves. There was a trophy to be awarded so immediately following regulation the match went to PKs.

Funny! Can none of us go even a few hours without our Kickette fix? I was just going to ask everybody the same Kickette question.

Jesse, didn’t Buddle score from a pass in open play and not a free-kick? I only listened to the broadcast.
Laurie, sorry I put this in your last post, but the game and therefore announcer doesn’t get going until several minutes into the tape. I can understand they couldn’t avoid the void while waiting for the match to start last night, but they probably could have edited it out before hanging the thing on their site

And thanks for the info, Jesse!

Diane, all I know about the goal is what the various websites tell me, which is basically nothing. I’ll see if I can’t get a few minutes later today to listen to the tape, at least through the goal. Or I could take your word for it, which would probably be easier.

Oh, and I don’t (and won’t) get this random adding on of penalty kicks post regulation time. I’m starting a conspiracy theory that the Americans-can-never-like-a-game-that-ends-in-a-draw crowd were hard at work here.
If its a high enough stakes game, like a World Cup or a friendly in Minnesota (apparently), do it right, have the overtime, and then the penalties if necessary. Or, if it is a POST-SEASON friendly, assume that even the dim masses understand what a tie is.
I know, its a Copa CUP match, but then why was it called an exhibition game with the home side allowed to fly in players from wherever inclined–including one of the visitors goalies? F**king anarchy!!
Not that I mind…as long as the world’s favorite game isn’t changed in the U.S. on the theory that we have to see numbers on a scoreboard. (It would be easier to accomplish that the way American football did, by making each point worth six

Actually there are a couple of South American tournaments
which skip the overtime and go directly to kicks. I can
understand it in an exhibition thing like this to save
wear and tear on players.Posted from

Quoted again!
Anyway, there’s an article available from MLSnet now, which might help us get some of our facts straight:
