A Fit Beckham Will Get His 100th Cap
By: jen | March 6th, 2008According to this Telegraph article, Fabio Capello has been quoted as saying:
“He is in contention for France,” Capello revealed yesterday. “We will check him in Dallas, and then we will decide whether he will be fit for France. He will get his 100th cap if he is fit and in form.”
Can I be the cynical one and say I’ll believe it when I see it? At this point, it’s not just about match fitness, is it? I think it’s clear that Beckham is match fit.
I’m hoping that Becks gets called up and assists every chance England has. Take that Capello! And of course, I doubly hope for Beckham’s call up because our trusty Galaxy blogger, Laurie, will be there in the flesh! Hey, maybe she can get some pictures and video for us.

Capello is a professional button-pusher. He’s saying what he’s saying to drive Beckham. Fear not. Becks (that’s David Beckham, not Kyle Beckerman) will play again for England.

Becks is not interested in contributing to the team, as it appears that he is more concerned about his 100th cap. I’m sure his teammates love that.

I think Beckham has so much love for the game and his country that he’ll do what ever it takes to be back on the National team squad. I’m pretty confident in saying he’ll want to contribute while he’s out there

To paraphrase what Beckham actually said, and has said consistently, is that although it is a dream to win 100 caps, if that doesn’t happen he’ll be proud of the career he’s had playing for England. He’s also said that 100 caps is just a milestone and that he would be available to play for his country as long as he thinks he still has something to offer, and the rest is “obviously up to the manager.”
The only way to know what Beckham says is to listen to whole interviews, it can be pretty funny (or sad) to see the way snippets are used to make and/or distort stories. Obviously this is true with all quotes in the media, but the British tabs make an unusual amount of money from anything they can make into a headline off Beckham–which seems to be just about anything real of fictitious.
If you’ve watched his career at any point, its hard to doubt his commitment to any club he plays for and particularly his commitment to his teammates.Hi Jen, thanks for keeping us company this weekend!

I agree, Diane. He has said that he feels he’s got a few more years in him for national play. And he’s got the work ethic and dedication to do it. He would be a great example to the younger English players who are the future of the team. Will Beckham play in 2010? Perhaps not, but he can be a formative influence on the team and players who DO play in 2010.
