A Photo that Warms My Cockles. Or Something.

By: Laurie | December 3rd, 2008

You guys probably won’t love this picture quite like I do, but hey. That’s one of the benefits of having an Offside password, right? I can post whatever I want. (And you know I’m almost pretty much totally kidding, right?)

This is Becks with Christian Karembeu, formerly of the France National Team (circa the 1998 World Cup.) Karembeu is from New Caledonia and will be playing on the Oceania All Stars in New Zealand one of these days. I have no idea when, exactly, except that whatever the date is? Don’t forget to subtract a day because of that accursed International Date Line thing.

Or…never mind. I went and researched it and discovered the following:

The game, which will be played at Mt. Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, will kick off at 10:30 p.m. (PT) on Friday, December 5 and air live on Fox Soccer Channel. Fox Sports en Español will air the match on a half-hour delay at 11 p.m. (PT).

That is apparently OUR December 5, not theirs. And East Coasters? Drink lots of caffeine or fire up the TiVo.

I read that Edgar David’s will be playing for Oceania. Maybe Bruce and Dave will bring him in to stiffen up the mid-field?

I can’t say that I remember Karembeu all that much from 1998, and I thought maybe he was a backup. Then I looked him up, and found that he played in the quarterfinal, semifinal, and final, plus the group game against Denmark (France’s first two group games were more easy, against Saudi Arabia and South Africa). Don’t know why he wasn’t in the R16 game.

And if the guys (literally) aren’t interested in that picture, I think a picture of Mr. Karembeu’s wife would attract more attention.

Evan, I find the two of them as a couple endlessly fascinating. I’m sure I have a few photos stored on my computer somewhere. Maybe I’ll post them after the game tomorrow.

Edgar did train with the Galaxy earlier this year I think. And if Donovan does go to Munich, there could be a space for him. It seems unlikely, but not impossible.
