Alexi and Frank Talk About Beckham’s Schedule Conflicts and Loan Rumors
By: Laurie | May 27th, 2007Yesterday’s game was WAY too depressing to waste more words on, so let’s talk some more about Beckham, shall we?
David Beckham’s recall to the England NT has caused all kinds of speculation about his club future. Since the MLS season ends in November, just as the European seasons are getting ramped up, there had been some talk of another team acquiring David on loan after the MLS season, at least partially so he can maintain his level of fitness on the same schedule as the other national team players. EPL teams like Everton, Tottehnham, Blackburn and Newcastle have all expressed an interest.
But Galaxy coach Frank Yallop has doused these rumors with a bucket of icy Gatorade.
Yallop told Sky Sports News: “He won’t be going on loan anywhere. He’ll be taking a break at that point and getting ready for our pre-season. “He’s shown that he’s a world class player, he doesn’t need to go back and go on loan anywhere.”
And what about those schedule conflicts and all the heartburn that Yallop, Anschutz and the MLS execs must be going through now that the England NT schedule needs to be taken into consideration?
“I think that David is going to have such an impact when he joins the squad again that I think it will be difficult to leave him out to be honest,” he explained. “We realise that David wants to get to the 100-cap plateau and we will never stop him doing that.”
Never? Okay, then.
We also have another article at Soccer365 detailing GM Alexi Lalas’s concerns about those conflicts:
Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas admits they are concerned over Beckham’s international situation from a business point of view, and hinted he may not be released for any non-competitive games… “I don’t want to stand in the way of a player representing his country but we have to be prudent and understand they have to be the appropriate games. I would think they would have to be competitive matches.
“If it works out scheduling wise, we would be happy to let him go. But he has a responsibility on and off the field to our organisation and to our support. I think he is excited about pursuing that responsibility.”
Maybe we should all chip in and buy Frank and Alexi a giant, economy-sized prescription to Prozac. What do you think?

Prozac, or a mini-course at public relations school. Probably the classier comment regarding your new player’s call up to their national team would be, “congratulations.” Rather than going public with the more indentured servitude scented remarks.

Actually, the linked article is something like 90% “Congratulations” and 10% “But what about us?” And since I share both sentiments, I can understand where they’re coming from.

Hi Laurie, true, agreed, and I completely forgot that I like Lalas’ candidness. I might have waited for the guy to make it through the qualifier he was called up for (next week), but that’s just me being superstitious…as ALWAYS…
