Another Brit Coming to the Galaxy?

currie.jpgEnglish midfielder Darren Currie is coming to the Galaxy for a two-week trial.

Darren who? you ask. Well, I’m totally on it and have googled him from here to Ipswich, so here’s what I know. Darren is thirty-two and he plays midfield. He’s played for half-a-dozen or so teams in England, most recently Football League Championship lower-middle-of-the-table team Ipswich. His uncle was an English International player. Other than that… Let’s see…

No affairs that the tabloids have picked up. (Pick your own link to your personal favorite European player and insert it here.)

No strip scrabble games with ladies not his wife (or fiancee.)

No coaches implying that he’s mentally unstable. In fact, his coach says, “He’s been a model professional in his time at Ipswich.”

Geez, Darren! You call yourself European?!?!

Oh, wait. Here we go. He’s thought to be the most tattooed player in English football. So that’s something. And he also has a fondness for odd hairstyles. That could add some spice.

But how does he play? you ask.

What, you mean you don’t want me following the Galaxy website’s lead and offering only fluff?

Okay, fine. Here’s how he plays. From these clips it looks like he’s not heavy on the pace but has a decent shot and free kick. (Because heaven knows a team can’t have too many free kick specialists.)

Without further ado, here’s Darren at Ipswich.

Currie used to play for my hometown team, Brighton and Hove Albion. We did quite well selling him for $500k or so, but he was a useful player with creative skills. My guess is he will bring something a little extra to an MLS roster.
