Another “I Wish I’d Written That” Post on Beckham

By: Laurie | June 12th, 2007

I have NO time to write today, so instead I’ll just link you to yet another post I wish I’d written, “The Beckham Rules” from Footballs are Round. It includes all the new rules that will take effect once Beckham takes the pitch in July.

Among these new rules:

Failing to yield to Mr. Beckham on a 50-50 ball: 1 game

Recklessly blocking a Mr. Beckham free kick or cross: 2 games.

Giving Mr. Beckham a dirty look: 2 games.

Speaking to Mr. Beckham without having been spoken to first: 3 games.

Be sure to check it out. VERY funny.

My, my, there’s are a lot of we hate all Beckhams everywhere posts and comments around The Offside today…it’s enough to make a girl dizzy! So, give me a quick update, do we want him or don’t we want him? (And not in the Biblical sense you gutter sluts.)

Personally, I’m not sure The Galaxy are quite ready for their close-up, and he certainly attracts the spotlight the league was hoping for…maybe we’re having performance anxiety!

So if we DON’T want him, shouldn’t we have been encouraging Galaxy to sell him back to Madrid (who are very much fun to watch these days if you can find a bar with a dish that gets La Liga *grrrr*), instead of fretting about the possibility that he wouldn’t show up?

I’m SO delicate, I guess what with the leg breaking foul and the guy over at Bob’s who wants Posh’s head used for batting practice, I got a tad faint of heart. SUCH a mom…

Funny, I didn’t really read this one as anti-David. More anti-the-huge-MLS-Beckham-hype, which I’m sure is as much a concern to Beckham as to everybody else. My guess is that the MLS powers-that-be WOULD like to implement rules like this for the “good” of the US game, and that Beckham would be just as appalled by them as anybody else. I think he just wants to come and play football.

As far as the anti-Posh stuff… Well, guilty as charged, I’m afraid. I have no idea why I dislike her so much, aside from the fact that she seems utterly, crassly materialistic and self-absorbed. And yes, Bob dislikes her even more than I do. It’s sad, because I have seen videos of her in the past where she seems utterly sweet and charming. You don’t really see those anymore — just videos of her shopping and overdressing. But I will keep an eye out for that Princess Diana transformation, and if it happens I’ll be more than happy to report on it.

You’ve cheered my up so much with the Becks and Zizou cuddle that I’ve regained my equilibrium. Posh, eh, no one knows why they dislike her so much and I have no idea why I defend her so frequently (well anyone from bats to the head…but other than that). Holdover from my surprise at the early days of death threats, etc., while they were still in Manchester, I guess…or else simply the occasional someone’s gotta do it?

As always, I do agree that an ENORMOUS amount of charitable largess is called for…no matter what!
