Are the Galaxy Ready for Their Closeup?

By: Laurie | June 29th, 2008

Galaxy-DC, today, 9:00 a.m. Pacific. On…guess where? You’ll never guess!

ABC

Yes, I’m serious.

We’re part of a double-header. DC-Galaxy first, Euro 2008 final second. It will probably the first time a lot of people have seen an MLS game. (Or part of an MLS game, if they’re looking for the final and tune in early.)

No pressure, boys!

There was no way for the MLS scheduler to know that he’d picked two teams that would be in the middle of hot streaks on June 29, but he did. LA just hit the top of the Western Conference, and DC started slow (VERY slow) but has won four of it’s last five, and drew the other one.

I’m hoping for a high-energy game. If you’re watching from home, stop by and leave comments!

Yikes.. sloppy, sloppy defense. It looks like Cronin’s been left alone in the goal… and that’s never good news.

At least Cronin’s getting a lot of chance to practice his trade today. That’s a bright side. Right?

Aw crap. Was hoping for at least another goal to make it look, well, less bad.

Edson worked his tail off, Landycakes seemed to but made a lot of blunders. Highly unfortunate.

That humidity didn’t seem to affect Utd… pays to train in the soup, huh? By the 40th minute our guys were getting slushy legs. Utd. looked solid throughout. Damn.

Just did the math for this match… Buddle outperformed Landkycakes… again. Time for USMNT duty already. It’ll only help him improve his game.

Buddle did not outperform Landon today. Buddle definitely had his share of mess-ups as well. The guy can’t play a one-touch, give-and-go to save his life. It’s more than just scoring goals – you’ve got to play smart, make intelligent runs, make proper decisions with the ball, and that was all in short supply from Buddle today. But he did well on his goal, I’ll give him that.

DC should have played a man down the entire second half. Gallardo throwing the elbow is an automatic red card. Too bad.

But the Galaxy were definitely not the better team on the day.

On the bright side, had a houseful — who’ve either never watched or disdained MLS — getting ready for EURO final. Never expected they would be distracted by this match, but within the first few minutes everyone was paying attention.

They were impressed by both teams and enjoyed the action. Obviously not as thrilled during second half but they’d seen their own Premiership and La Liga clubs, respectively, wilt on occasion as well.

It won’t help ease the pain of the loss and watching another repetition of mistakes, but it made me take a fresh look at the team and see even more clearly how far they have come from the beginning of the season. As everyone has mentioned they are fun to watch, and the mistakes they make don’t look like they’re being made by an amateur team. And they sure do look like a team — with a plan, even when not executing.

And the first half was fun to watch.

p.s. Were we the only group that found Donovan’s first effort onside? Even when yellow for-tv line was applied?

I just read that Ruiz could on his way out. Now just dump Abel and Pete and pick up a quality CD (Bobo Balde from Celitc), DM, and an experienced GK (Kasey Keller)that can stop the bleeding.

First off, we need AEG to wake up and get rid of Lalas – this is how this whole mess of a team for the past 2 1/2 years got started – he has no clue how to be a GM (remember his days in San Jose and NY). I honestly believe they have him there as just a figure head – a face of American soccer only!
Second, now that we have a GM that knows what he is doing, we need to ship out Ruiz (though I hate to see him go – i think he still has a lot to offer when he is healthy), Xavier (not worth the $$$), Vagenas, Roberts, & Vanney! Go and get some freakin’ defenders! Move Franlink to his natural position – Right Back and get Klein into a midfield positions – he gets beat way to much as a right back. Enough said for now.

This game should/must be the wakeup call- we can’t keep going with some of these players and being hit and miss. Klien needs to be in the midfield to help hold the ball and set up some nice runs along side Beckham, move Franklin to where he belongs in the backfield and bring in a couple talented defenders from dumping some of the players that has already been mentioned. Also Cronin needs to be on the bench and I think not using Wicks from the start of the season was a disaster, if I recall he was the #1 keeper in the USL. Why would you have an untested keeper like Cronin over Wicks is something I will never understand (we’ve seen the difference between them). Now were in a bad position with Wicks out and Cronin all we have. Unbelievable!

We have a chance to really finish out the season right with just a few player movements. Come on Galaxy management, get this right! Damn :p

Wow talk about jumping on the bandwagon after a defeat. The team on saturday played pretty much the way they have all season. The 2- beating of San Jose was totally uninspired and the defending early in the game was amongst the worst i have ever seen. I think most of the performances since then have been hit and miss in the same way, but they say that good pitching wins over good hitting and in soccer godd defense will ultimatly prevail over good offense.

But here are the ggod things, Cronin has improved a lot! He was terrible to start the season but has steadinly improved, Sunday was his worst game in a long time, totally mis- read the header (thinking it was going well wide)and then made the exact same mistake on the long free kick that hit the post. Still hopefully he can get a little training and improve there too, he handling and quickness off the line has improved a lot.

Franklin for my money has been a wonderful suprise, unfortunatly Abel regressed back again it’s unbelievable how bad he looks some times, i rell think he is much better than that.

As for Buddle he has been astonishing I’m amazed at how many goals he has scored, but watch out he is nowhere near that good. (Really hope I’m wrong on that one).

My biggest concerns are Pires and Franchino, the last couple of games they played they looked terrible. Pires was the worst player on the field on Sunday. Those two and Abel so far below what he can/has done are my worries.

    Here’s what i don’t get
