Back from Vancouver and We Have a New Coach
By: Laurie | November 8th, 2007Geez, can’t I leave you guys alone for one day without all hell breaking loose?
Just got in from my trip to Canada to see the Galaxy. Yawn. I won’t say the game was boring, but… Well, I won’t say it was exciting, either. Except for the streaker. That was fun. Not pretty, but hilarious. (Check out the video at the bottom.) I feel for the guy who got the job of taking him down. Must’ve drawn the short straw, eh?
But at least he just had to shove him rather than tackle him.
I’ll give you a second to deal with the mental/tactile picture here.
Okay, better now? Moving on.
The funniest part was that from where I was sitting, it looked like they covered him with a Galaxy warmup jacket. Wonder who the lucky donor was?
More about the game later. In more important news, rumor has it that we have a new coach: Ruud Gullit. When I get a minute I’ll do some research and get back to you.
For now, though, I have to go dress up and go to a charity dinner. LOVE these things.
Oh. Wait. I’m thinking of somebody else.
Enjoy our streaker while I’m gone!!

I have a certain respect for streakers in Canada in November. That says you really mean it. I love how long he was able to run around, even with one pants leg still on, before they caught him. He could have done a lap. I wonder if the security guys really were pulling straws to see who got to jump on the naked guy in the cold?

Congrats, Ruud Gullit is one of the dumbest people I have ever heard open their mouth. Well, he’s in the top 3 with Graeme Souness and Eric Wynalda. Enjoy incompetency.

Well, he’s also got 2 European Cups, so if he’s a dumbass, at least he’s a dumbass that can win. Anyway, unless Alexi Lalas lets him do his job, it won’t really matter. Lalas was always more the problem than Yallop.

According to the LA Times, they said if Gullit is hired as head coach, Cobi may be appointed assistant HC. I hope the latter happens now that the former did.
I started to watch the game last night but I had too much homework and a painting to finish. Where was Kyle Martino? I didn’t see him on the bench. And I’m glad you’re a Martino fan also, yours is one of the only blogs who consistently writes about him. So thanks!

How is playing on The Invincibles going impact anything he ever does as a coach? Just because he was on great teams and was a good player doesn’t mean he’s knows how to win from the sidelines. In fact, it’s usually just the opposite. The best coaches sucked.

True on the fact that a great player doesn’t translate to great managing. He did get an FA Cup as a manager, but he got a lot of crap results as well. I guess it comes down to what I said before - the team needs a new front office, not a new manager.

And of course, Souness won nothing as player nor manager either. Oh wait, he’s probably won more trophies as both than most clubs. Only 29, not counting the minor ones. If that’s dumb, than we’re all mental.

It’s a step up, no doubt. An FA Cup is nothing to sneeze at. However, still does not solve the issues at forward/midfield/defense!

Ian, you will be heartbroken to hear that a) it was 55 degress in Vancouver last night, and b) the stadium was indoors. So much for that “really mean it” thing, eh?
Ian, Chris, chris, Nahir etc., I’m reserving judgment on Gullit until I actually, y’know, know something about him. Until then, all input welcome. But does anybody else think he looks like Frank Rijkaard?
Tiffany, off the top of my head these players stayed home: Xavier, Harden, Martino, Gordon, Glinton. I’m sure there were a couple of others as well.

The legs on the streaker… makes me think he’s one of the Vansterdam reserve players. And he could run… one end of the pitch, across the penalty area then up the other side of the pitch. Not bad. Course in the US the paramilitaries woulda beat the daylights out of him first, or just shot him with a sniper. Oh, Ca-na-da…
How the hell is the new coach guy? He won 2 Euro cups… for who? Such a name on the man…. oy vey!

Say the word and my magical keyboard can delete duplicate posts. And correct typos. And then delete any post that refers to the deleted post, like this one. But you have to ask.
It’s good to be the king.

The several things I’ve read about Gullit’s previous coaching experiences lead me to believe that he will last a maximum of two years and maybe less and that 2008 will be just as much of a clusterfvck as 2007.
But I also said that Blanco would ruin Chicago so take that for what it is: ramblings based on newspaper reports.
Still the reports do not inspire confidence and his penchant for not completing seasons bothers me.
You know who would have been an actual good coach for the Galaxy, were they not owned by AEG and “managed” by Lalas? Paul Mariner, the assistant coach of New England.
The Lalas Destruction Factor strikes again (and I can’t tell you how much I want to be wrong about that).
