Backham’s not Starting Against Chelsea? ESPN and the MLS Money Guys Shudder
By: Laurie | July 19th, 2007So far I’m seeing this only in another blog, but it seems credible. Plus it’s not a huge surprise, is it? I mean, all you have to do is go back and take a look at that icepack photo. That’s not the kind of thing they put on healthy players. It’s the kind of thing they put on injured guys whom they desperately want to play. Guys like the MLS cash cow, David Beckham.
Soccer y FĂștbol reports
Lalas said Beckham’s injured left ankle is improving, but that “we could probably rule him out as a starter at this point.”
He said Beckham might play for a short time, but that the English international will be a gametime decision
This sucks on any number of levels.
And now I’m back to my original prediction: Beckham subs in at about the 75th, and the Galaxy lose 3-0. Or maybe 4-0. Or…
Well, let’s just stop it there, okay?

I really hope he does not play. I know he is thinking this based on what he said on the ESPN half time interview. He is here for 5 years. If he gets hurt trying to play in one game he could be out for another 6 weeks. In which case MLS and the Galaxy would really be screwed when the show up to an angry crowd of 45,000 at RFK due to a lack of Beckham. Let him rest, he himself said he is not ready. Skip the World Series of Football. All those games are going to sell out anyways. Give him another two weeks to rest and he’ll be set to go for the next Galaxy road game.

He seemed to be going to great lengths to lower expectations last night. It would be disappointing to not see him play, but he and the Galaxy have got to be thinking long-term here.
Maybe he should take up Quidditch? Less stress on the joints and all.
