Beckham and Real Win the Title (and Oh! Look! It’s Zidane!)
By: Laurie | June 20th, 2007
I’m several days behind in posting this, having just gotten rid of the visiting relatives, so it’s no longer news that Real Madrid won the La Liga title. I didn’t see the game, but it sounds like a still-injured Beckham wasn’t much of a force. But he certainly was in the games that got them to that point.
And that’s that for the Beckham-Madrid thing, right?
Except… Oh! Wait! Look! Zidane is quoted again! Which means I can post another Zidane-and-Beckham snuggle photo! (LOVE those Zidane-and-Beckham snuggle photos.)
And here we have, yet again, another interview — this one from Zidane — that is not so complimentary of MLS:
Reflecting on January, when Becks was told he would not get a new Real deal, Zizou said: “The damage had already been done, they should have done more to keep him. There was never any doubt in my mind that he wanted to end his career at the club. But what is the point of staying somewhere you’re clearly not wanted?
“Is it a big mistake? Absolutely. I think Madrid should have done everything in their power to keep him because he’s unique. They won’t find it easy to replace him - it’s almost impossible. I think he’s saddened by his departure. It’s not what he wanted. I don’t think he ever thought it would end like this.”
It’s okay, Zizou. We’re used to being considered the chopped liver of the soccer universe. We’ll get over it.
On a more positive note:
He added: “He could have continued playing at the highest level in Europe for a few more years but he’s taken on a different kind of challenge in America. He’s far too driven to even think about taking it easy. If anything he will probably be more determined because people have questioned the move. If you look at his form in recent months I don’t think anyone can really question whether he has the drive to compete.
Which mean, of course, that ALL of our problems will be fixed with the arrival of Beckham. Assuming he’s not still injured. Which he won’t be. Right?

The interesting situation for me will be whether he is too injured to play 3 friendlies a week for Gals, but still just healthy enough to play Euro qualies for England. As if Lalas doesn’t hate England enough already …

Oh, Zizou ! You like him ? (Who don’t ?). He’s a very very charismatic guy. I had the chance to meet him and shake his hand, last year. He always come to Lyon Gerland for “Danone Nations Cup”. I sware you can only look at him, when you enter in the room where he is… That’s really impressive. He’s got something magic ! I will probably meet him again on July, the 1st, for the Danone Nations Cup. Hope so. Do U want me to transmit a message ?

Also, good job to Real Madrid for playing the Peace Match against a unified Israel/Palestine team just after winning the title. Excellent match and a great idea.

Jo, welcome to the blog. Those who come here regularly know that my ferocious Zidane crush is somewhat legendary.
(And by that I again of course mean: YES! VERY happily married! And thanks again for asking!)
And oh my Lord. A message for Zizou?
Um… Perhaps you could just drool a bit for me. That’s certainly what I would do in your position.

I can send you the photo I took last year, if U want. That’s not zizou with me, but with the child I was come with. I’m working in a radio, in Lyon, and I offered this present to this little Child. I will do the same present “on air” next week. That’s probably the most beautiful things we can offer…
