Beckham Injury to Delay LA Start?

By: Laurie | March 5th, 2007

Geez, I am just getting rotten news all over the place this week. Or maybe MLS is just cursed. What do you think?

David Beckham, the star to which MLS has hitched its Wagon o’ Hopes, apparently suffered a pretty serious knee injury this weekend playing for Real Madrid.

E! News (hey, do I pick legitimate sports sources or WHAT?!) says that he suffered ligament damage to his right knee, and that this could delay his coming to the Galaxy by two months.

Although if you go to NBC4.com, they say that Beckham could be OUT for two months. Which would make him all better in May, well before his expected August arrival date. Hmm. Who should we believe?

Regardless, this is NOT good news. (Is anybody else thinking that we’d all be better off if Capello had just kept him benched?) Potentially bad for the Galaxy if it does delay his arrival, and potentially bad for all of MLS. Think of all those poor teams across the country, selling thousands and thousands of tickets based on the “Beckham will be here” premise.

Let’s just hope those tickets are nonrefundable.

Yeah, I think E! Online simply made the assumption about the MLS delay. The 6-8 week figure is what I’ve seen tossed around everywhere, not some four month period which is what would be the case if it were to have significant impact upon his MLS arrival.

Awful news, but it’s one of those fluke injuries, so what can ya do? I’m sure we’re all wishing him the best! I sincerely doubt it will impact his MLS arrival, which is certainly the silver lining for us.

Fortunately, the tickets probably are nonrefundable.

I would go with NBC news, though a better place to check would be the Real Madrid Website.

One ligament sprain, they say he should be out four weeks. Everyone’s hoping he can get back on the pitch before the end of Madrid’s season–mid-June. Potentially bad news for Galaxy and MLS, but REALLY bad news for Beckham who likes playing football, along with all athletes dislikes sitting on bench, and had a lot personally invested in his final European season.
