Beckham Not Called Up for England
By: Laurie | October 5th, 2007I realized today that because I am a fan of the France National Team, and because the France NT manager seems to live for and thrive on conflict, I just automatically expect every national team manager to be implacable and uncompromising when it comes to club vs. country.
Of course, David Beckham’s back-to-back August games — England vs. Germany one day before Galaxy vs. Chivas — may have colored my opinion just a bit.
But apparently when it came to the upcoming October England games, somebody has decided to be reasonable. David Beckham was not called up for England.
I wonder how much of this was due to the fact that England won their two September qualifiers against Israel and Russia without Beckham, both 3-0, and lost the last game he played with them, against Germany, 1-2.
Before he was recalled to the NT in June he was seen almost as a talisman; a lot of folks felt that England could not win without him and would unquestionably lose if he didn’t play. The August and September games changed that, and now Beckham doesn’t seem to be viewed as being the only skilled player/good luck charm necessary for an England win.
So perhaps McClaren now recognizes that having him in England while he’s possibly not fully fit wouldn’t be in anyone’s best interests.
Or not. Whatever. But this is good news for the Galaxy.
