Beckham Playing for England?
By: Laurie | November 5th, 2007
Several English papers are reporting that David Beckham will be called up for the friendly against Austria on the 16th and the possibly all-important Euro qualifier game against Croatia on the 21st.
Of course, there is the possibility that rather than being “all-important,” the Croatia match could be more along the lines of “completely meaningless.” That’s what will happen if Russia beats Israel on the 17th, thus eliminating England from Euro ‘08 contention.
David is, of course, hoping this won’t happen. We Galaxy fans, who are hoping for a full summer with Beckham next year without that whole Euro distraction thing, aren’t so sure. But I think we’re all in agreement that we’d like to see him reach 100 caps.
TimesOnline reports that McClaren traveled to Los Angeles this weekend to discuss this with Becks and check on his fitness. And 100 Percent Soccer reports that Beckham was the only player in last night’s charity friendly to go completely all out in his play. And Steve McClaren was reportedly in the stands. Coincidence, surely. (More on that game later. And you have no idea how nice it is to have actual team news to report in the off-season.)
with England Coach Steve McClaren in the stands Beckham appears to be taking the game little more seriously than virtually anyone else. He went in hard on LeBeouf with one tackle that seemed more than a little over the top, for instance.
From the TimesOnline article:
McClaren refused to comment on his intentions last night, but informed sources at the Football Association confirmed that Beckham was back for one last hurrah. Well, we assume it will be a last hurrah.
If Beckham plays in both the Austria and Croatia games, he’ll get his 98th and 99th caps. Let’s all hope there is at least one more to come. Go, David!
