Beckham to Return to England NT? The British Press Says It’s True
By: Laurie | May 25th, 2007
The England papers today are filled with reports that England manager Steve McLaren will be eating crow tomorrow and naming David Beckham to the England squad again for the June Euro ‘08 qualifier against Estonia and friendly against Brazil.
In case you were living under a rock after World Cup, McClaren did some housekeeping when he took over for Sven, and the first to be swept out the door was former captain Beckham, with whom he’d apparently had some issues during their days together at ManU.
So. Coach McClaren. How’s that post-Beckham thing working out for you?
Let’s see… In a group that is not exactly world class, England has beaten Andorra twice. (Thank GOD for teams like Andorra!) They beat Macedonia by the lowest possible margin, 1-0, then TIED them 0-0. And they lost to Croatia and tied with Israel. So they’re currently in fourth place, but…well, darn it, no more Andorra games! And they still have to play Russia. Twice.
And so the Bring Back Beckham campaign has gained force, spurred on by Becks’ recent solid play at Real Madrid. Will this be enough for a Beckham recall? We shall find out tomorrow.

I’m all for Beckham being in the squad. He’s earned it. I think it was right to strip of him of the captaincy and in general I prefer Aaron Lennon on the right for the starting XI, but it’s hard to claim there are over half a dozen better English midfielders out there right now.

Yeah, despite all the hype and media BS, he certainly belongs on that squad, and McClaren should name him. England could use a boost, and bringing back the old captain, who many on the team would welcome back, plus the resurgence of fan interest that it would generate, might just help get the team out of their current doldrums.

The thing about Beckham I like is that you know he really bloody cares about England. I’m not sure I can say the same about a number of England players lately, judging from their insipid efforts.

I always thought that Beckham being dropped from the squad was more of a petty personal grudge that McClaren had than a professional decision. There are far worse players on the England squad than Beckham, and they are far less professional.
Maybe Posh pissed off Steve.

I agree with you Tom. Anyone that wouldn’t beg for the chance to play for their national side doesn’t deserve to do so. Beckham cares about the Three Lions, not just the chance that he might get hurt and miss a paycheck. Most of the team is rubbish right now – he could only help.

It’s a shame Becks announced that he longer felt the need to wear the captain’s armband. I imagine that if he did not retire as captain, then McClaren would not have had the balls to drop him. England may/would have been a better team over the last year and probably would be topping the group!
Lennon is great and has so much potential, but thats just it, potential. He has pace, plays good football and can finish every now and then, but Beckham is so much better. In a few years, hopefully Lennon will have turned in to half the player Beckham was.
And I agree with you about the passion side of things. Rarely have England players showed an ounce of the passion Beckham has.

Did I read late last night that Lennon was injured in the B game?
