It's a shame Becks announced that he longer felt the need to wear the captain's armband. I imagine that if he did not retire as captain, then McClaren would not have had the balls to drop him. England may/would have been a better team over the last year and probably would be topping the group!

Lennon is great and has so much potential, but thats just it, potential. He has pace, plays good football and can finish every now and then, but Beckham is so much better. In a few years, hopefully Lennon will have turned in to half the player Beckham was.

And I agree with you about the passion side of things. Rarely have England players showed an ounce of the passion Beckham has.

I agree with you Tom. Anyone that wouldn't beg for the chance to play for their national side doesn't deserve to do so. Beckham cares about the Three Lions, not just the chance that he might get hurt and miss a paycheck. Most of the team is rubbish right now - he could only help.

I always thought that Beckham being dropped from the squad was more of a petty personal grudge that McClaren had than a professional decision. There are far worse players on the England squad than Beckham, and they are far less professional.

Maybe Posh pissed off Steve.

The thing about Beckham I like is that you know he really bloody cares about England. I'm not sure I can say the same about a number of England players lately, judging from their insipid efforts.

Yeah, despite all the hype and media BS, he certainly belongs on that squad, and McClaren should name him. England could use a boost, and bringing back the old captain, who many on the team would welcome back, plus the resurgence of fan interest that it would generate, might just help get the team out of their current doldrums.

I'm all for Beckham being in the squad. He's earned it. I think it was right to strip of him of the captaincy and in general I prefer Aaron Lennon on the right for the starting XI, but it's hard to claim there are over half a dozen better English midfielders out there right now.
