Beckham “Unsure” Against the Revs
By: Laurie | August 12th, 2007Is David Beckham playing today? It’s not looking good.
After the DC game he said he was hoping to play an entire half against New England and a full game next weekend against New York. But, sadly, his ankle had other plans. It swelled up again after his eighteen minutes on the field on Thursday. From MLSnet:
Beckham’s involvement is not “100 percent” assured in his mind. The midfielder stretched and ran circuits around the Gillette Stadium field during the Galaxy’s Saturday afternoon training session but did not make any cuts on the injured ankle.
Numerous factors, including the extensive travel undertaken by the team over the past week, the artificial surface at Gillette Stadium and the fixture congestion of playing three contests in a week, could play a role in how much time Beckham will see Sunday night.
You know, I was just rereading the Season Preview I wrote for The Offside main page back in March. It said:
We’ll be in trouble if…
…Beckham picks up an injury. The guy is thirty-one. He gives 100%. Will the ol’ body be able to take it?
Yes, I was right. And yes, we’re in trouble.

Once again I must wonder whether this team/league has physicians, managers, coaches or even spokespersons. Or whether it is common practice for players to diagnose themselves, judge their own fitness, decide when and where they play, and keep the press apprised of same? The road trip was a joke, someone should have had the balls to leave him in Carson for treatment, explain why, and get on with it…
Although he’s certainly been in the circus long enough, I’m not sure even Beckham has experienced one in which two shows are worth risking a season or career. I’m thinking more of the “this is getting creepy” post than the might he get injured…every team in the league has an injured list, full of people not playing on them.
Yuch, the fact that MLSnet says “in his mind” and that there are “numerous factors” (instead of simply, and unfortunately, a torn up ankle) is a little alternate universe for me. Creepy.Posted from

p.s. Laurie, is it too late to preface that I’m in complete agreement with your too many golden eggs in one basket theme? (Except maybe re age, as eggs…er…people can go bottoms up at any point).
