Beckham’s First Game to be Against Chelsea?
By: Laurie | March 9th, 2007Rumor has it that David Beckham’s first US game will be against former archrivals Chelsea on July 21. This game will be the last in Chelsea’s four-game preseason US tour. According to Bloomberg.com:
David Beckham’s first game for the Los Angeles Galaxy may be against Premiership champion Chelsea, home to his former England teammates John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole… Showpiece games against high-profile teams like Chelsea may help the Galaxy recoup some of its investment in getting Beckham
What?!? You mean there’s a mercenary reason for playing Chelsea? I thought it was just about bringing beautiful soccer to the US! I am SO disillusioned.
Oh, well. Who else wants to go see Mourinho’s fieldside theatrics?
Oh, and in your next spare moment, stop by and check out my brother-in-blog Jeff’s thoughts on the Galaxy-Chelski agreement. Made me giggle.

Mourinho won’t be their manager then anymore quite probably…
as for Galaxy’s Investment in Becks - that’s a few 100 thousands $
(most of his salary is paid by AEG, and I’m sure Becks already repaid the Galaxy part of the salary over 5 seasons before even having played a minute for them with all that publicity and attention)

Mourinho won’t go unless he is SACKED!! That won’t happen. Abramovich and Kenyon know what the FANS reaction will be if they did the deed. Mourinho will be around until at least 2010.
As for entertainment value, look how much more LA Galaxy’s investment in DB will pay off with Mourinho in town.
And there might be another ‘famous’ person in town for Chelsea’s tour - ME!!!!!Posted from

Clearly my brain is very small, but I don’t get it. Are the Galaxy suddenly getting cold feet about the Magical Drawing Power of Beckham, and want to make sure the place is full by bringing in a few other big names (a month or two away from fitness)? Unless they plan to put Chelsea on salary and bring them out every Wednesday for a match, the idea of this one match making even a small dent in the Beckham “investment” is laughable. Laughable I say!

I am pretty sure no one is expecting one game to recoup Beckhams investment. They just figure, since the Galaxy won’t be playing much in July (2 games I beleive), they might as well make some money on the side with these exhibition games.
