Beckham’s Former Teammates Pay Tribute (Video)

By: Laurie | July 5th, 2007

Eight days to David Beckham. Just in case you’d forgotten, and the three billion articles on this issue had somehow slipped by you.

The following video is the third of multiple videos currently posted on DailyMotion, apparently from the TV show on Beckham leaving Real Madrid. This one includes interviews with Roberto Carlos and Zinedine Zidane. (The other clips are, as I said, on DailyMotion. You can find them here.)

I found this one very interesting, and not because the first person interviewed in the clip is Zidane. (Or..okay, fine, not just because the first person interviewed is Zidane.)

Watch to the end, to the talking heads’ analysis of Beckham. It’s easy to forget, after this final, triumphant season, that Beckham’s time at Real Madrid wasn’t an unqualified success, and that there was a fair bit of jealousy among the ranks on his arrival. And yet eventually he made it work. (But it took several years.)

Let’s not look to closely for parallels here, okay? Just enjoy the video.

(Thanks to reader Diane for the link.)

Rats! I KNEW I should have watched it to the end, but after your Zidane and my Roberto Carlos, I had to go lie down and recuperate…actually I did find all five or million parts and they are quite interesting, even for non Real Madrid fans.

Parallels: The cockney is softened and still closer to American than to Spanish, so that should help with the initial ice-breaking, Beckham is a HUGE cheerleader, so that should also help. His new teammates only stand to benefit from his distribution skills (instead of worrying that he’ll replace them), AND my friends and I agree that being the dad of three boys may come in handier than Becks’ 20 years of dressing room experience when it comes to the diplomatic line he is about to walk ;-) .

Otherwise, its a crap shoot…(did you see the story about the number of cameras ESPN will be deploying on July 21st? And where? I think up the arse may be a trick of my memory but not too far off)…good luck to all of them!
