Beckham’s MLS Debut August 18 Against RBNY?

By: Laurie | August 8th, 2007

becham-baseball.jpgAccording to the New York Times (scroll down to where it says “Waiting for Beckham), we shouldn’t expect to see David Beckham in an MLS game until August 18.

“Beckham & Company have helped the Red Bulls sell more than 50,000 tickets for their game Aug. 18, which will probably be Beckham’s M.L.S. debut.”

Damn. I think there’s a chance I might be in LA next week for the DC SuperLiga game. Think there’s any possibility they’ll risk him in SuperLiga and jeopardize a Red Bulls debut? I want to see Beckham!! (Because of course we know he’s the only reason to buy Galaxy tickets. Why on earth would I want to see Cobi or Kyle or Ante or Landon?)

Think they’ll give me a refund?

(P.S. I debated putting in little smilies or winkies or other wry little emoticons to show that I am not serious about the whole “wanting a refund” thing. But I don’t like the WordPress emoticons. So I’ll just say it flat out: No, I am not one of THOSE fans.)

I still can’t see how he could miss the DC game. Even if he just goes in for 10 minutes at the end. Image all those pissed 45,000 fans, over half of which are there specifically to see Becks.

But don’t you know, CentralCoaster? Alexi and Co. aren’t going to be ruled by the almighty dollar anymore. Nuh-uh, no how, no way, never. It’s all about doing the right thing from here on out.

BECKHAM WORRIED ABOUT TURF MONSTERS (I don’t blame him. Turf can be nasty!):

While Beckham was unsure about his playing status, he had a strong message for MLS: Ditch the artificial turf.

Beckham said he’s noticed some things that are “not right” about MLS, and foremost in his mind was the fake grass used at four MLS stadiums. He said the fact that RFK Stadium has the real thing — unlike Toronto and New England, where the Galaxy play Sunday — will be a “huge factor” in whether he will play.

“As a professional athlete, you can’t play a game like soccer on that sort of field,” Beckham said. “What it does to your body as a soccer player, you’re in bits for three days after that.”

Thanks, Todd. I’d seen this one quoted elsewhere but hadn’t gotten around to searching out the original article. Now I don’t have to. :-)

Note the article says “MLS debut”. I think he will play in the SuperLiga semi-final, which is not an MLS debut.

The NYT can kiss my ass. They may be the country’s paper of record but their sports page is crap. Well-written crap, but don’t look to them to break any sports stories.

I personally think that he may play tonight. If he does, then he will NOT play on Sunday or on the 18th because of turf issues (unless the Revs keep that patch of grass they had the other day). If he doesn’t play today he MAY play on the Turf surfaces, but I doubt it. His ankle will still be iffy and why risk a long-term injury at this point?

I’m feeling very good about seeing Becks for 20-30 minutes on the 15th.

f.u.c.k beckham i tierd of waiting for him to play a full game hes no that good anyway is is overrated like all europen soccer players and soccer player from this side of the world can be just a good or even better example.. suazo(chile) Bravo (Mexico) Donovan (Usa) Ronaldo(Brazil) Riquelme (Argentina) Cabanas (Paraguay) Morales (mexico) Bautista (Mexico) De Rosario (Canada) There is many More…. oh and by the way to anyone interested the superliga. was created supposedly to have mexican teams compete against mls teams but to the Mexican teams the superliga was just a off-season tournament just for fun and none of them really took it as seriously as the mls teams.. for a tournament like this .. the top four of each leaugs season should play
