Brand Beckham’s $220,000 Birthday Fete

Love is a many-splendored thing, particularly when it involves an orgy of conspicuous consumption that only Brand Beckham could accomplish.
Reader Diane sent me this photo of Posh and David celebrating her 33rd birthday (and several other photos that, Luddite that I am, I can’t figure out how to link to. But I did figure out this one:Night on the Town) As Diane notes, look! Progress on several fronts. There’s an actual smile here somewhere! And an upper-body undergarment! And is that a…a bit of a tushie on our Posh? (Okay, yeah, maybe not in this photo. But in one of the others it certainly looks like it.) Perhaps the wine diet is working! Seriously, I always love to see parents of young children patch up their issues when it looks like things have been hitting the skids.
But, on the other hand, I can’t let this occasion pass without giving you Kickette’s take as well:
“David whisked Victoria around to numerous private appointments he had arranged for her at Christian Louboutin, Azzedine Alaia and the fabu boutique Colette before taking her to din-dins at Guy Savoy. It goes without saying that David hired out the entire restaurant. Because, god forbid any peasant-like, ugly people might be dining nearby and ruin the vibe. Not to mention it probably makes Victoria uncomfortable to see other people eating.
Transport to and from Paris was provided for by private jet. Again, avoiding lowly commercial travelers/the unattractive/the poor is key to simulated marital bliss. Remember this, Kickettes, make it your mantra.”
I guess it’s all a matter of perspective, eh?
(Okay, yes, one source said the cost of the day/night was ONLY $80,000. Whatever. It’s still more than you made last year, right? And even the lower figure is the equivalent of about 5 developmental player salaries. Yes, that’s annual.)

Goodie, you linked to the David As Dessert Glance photo! Re an MLS player strike — the kind where you don’t show up at work if you’re not paid enough, not the football kind where you do well at work when you show up — I think the timing is PERFECT. Investors, sponsors, broadcast networks, overseas clubs, host countries all flinging the vault doors open as these little illustrations of wage and lifestyle differences continue to pop up. Is it actually possible there is a player’s union? What can they possibly have negotiated for, Horrible Wages? The fans are outraged…

Diane, I’m in the process of reading up on the Players Union. And yes, the plight of Developmental players does disturb me. And it looks like they’re not up for renegotiaion until 2010. But that is also the estimated year for MLS profitability. So perhaps things will work out?
