My Gift to You: Forty-eight Hours Without Mentioning that DB Guy
By: Laurie | July 10th, 2007Somebody please make it stop!!
You know, back in January, I thought this David Beckham thing was an excellent idea. I mean, the league had matured to the point where they were ready for the world’s attention, right? All that was required was a reason for the spotlights of the world to turn in MLS’s direction. Instant attention = instant credibility. Right?
Except that things haven’t quite worked out that way.
I still think the Beckham signing will be a good thing, on balance. Meaning that I think we’ll all look back in ten years and think: Yes, that was one of the changes that moved things in a positive direction.
But there are going to be some serious growing pains between now and then. It’s not going to be as simple as holding up David Beckham on July 13, 2007 and saying, “See! We’ve arrived!” And right now I’m a little disoriented by the circus. I feel like I’m stuck on a merry-go-round that keeps moving faster and faster. At first it was fun. Now I’m feeling queasy and I just want to get off. At least for a little while.
So my gift, to you and to myself: Forty-eight Beckham-free hours. It’s now 2:30 in Tuesday afternoon on the West Coast. I’ll go Beckham free till at least 2:30 on Thursday. No photos, commercials, sex scandals, analyses… And best of all, no Posh either. Does that work for you?
Sure works for me.
Now can somebody slow the merry-go-round down, just for a second? Just long enough for me to jump.

For the same reason I enjoy poking road-kill with a stick*, I can’t get enough of Posh. Please keep the dirt - er, the dish - on her coming.
(* No, I don’t really enjoy this. I don’t think I’ve ever actually done it….well, at least not past puberty.)

You DO realize that now with your pledge to abstain Becks, some HUGE scandal is going to explode all over the news, right?
It’ll be Becks and Posh and Zizou and Vieri, in a bizarre “orgy+match-fixing+headbutting+coke” scandal, and you’re totally gonna miss out.
Take it back chica, it’s not too late.

Tidal wave: and it’s not something the Galaxy can control anymore if they wanted. Lalas & co might think they had a nice promo, play level building, cash inducing thing going. We know they were thrilled about the world markets into which they were gaining entrance. But I’ve never had the sense they imagined what life would be like when their sponsors put their own plans in place to suck the bucks out of Becks (wow, this whole post is worth that…I wish I could bold things!).
So, whatever the Galaxy or MLS’s thoughts on the matter, this is now an ESPN, Adidas, et al tidal wave (ESPN and Adidas being enough to require ark building). Add an international press that knows exactly how many papers its sold with that name above the fold (remember what got you to #1 on google, Laurie) and there really is no slowing down.
Except for Beckham, who is famous for having the tunnel vision to leave it all outside when he gets to work. But not everyone else does–let alone some of the young kids who have been playing in a fairly small pond (no matter what Lalas says). I haven’t had a cozy feeling regarding Lalas’ ability to organize the whole thing so that its manageable.
I’m hoping for the best for everyone, but I’m a little queasy too, Laurie. I may have to leave the country ;-)…

Mike, it would take all that PLUS a sweaty manpile for me to retract.
Diane, is it too late for me to join you on your journey?
Actually, I’m going camping with a bunch of kids the week after the arrival of he-who-must-not-be-named. I’ll catch the Chelsea game but miss SuperLiga. (Oh, darn. We all know how earth-shattering SuperLiga is going to be.) I think this is a good thing.

I couldn’t live 48 hours without my dosage of Posh and Becks.
If you ever read Perez Hilton (a gossip blogger), he posted some pics of those two for W magazine. He also posted his interview of Posh here.
Wow, I can’t believe I watched all that.

Come on, Laurie! I’m the budget flight finding GODDESS, so just let me know when you can depart and how many relatives you’re dragging out of harms way with you. Hmmm, imagine a non-virtual conversation…would we tap an imaginary keyboard as we spoke? It’s worth the risk. If not…seek higher ground asap!
Very cute Perez and Posh clip.
