Becks May not Play Against Chelsea

By: Laurie | July 14th, 2007

beckham-arrives.jpgDon’t forget. There’s still time! Fork over your cash to watch Beckham play next weekend against Chelsea!

Except maybe not.

Beckham said the ankle he injured in his final game with Real Madrid is “still unstable,” while Lalas said the club is taking things “day by day.”

(Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he actually injure it in the England Euro qualifier against Estonia in early June? An injury which he played on, but not well, in the Real Madrid game?)

Dang. This would sure throw a monkeywrench in that ESPN Beck-cam plus nineteen camera thing, wouldn’t it? And let’s not even think about how painful a game against Chelsea without Becks would be.

My prediction: Becks will still be injured, will be subbed in at about the 75th minute, and Galaxy will still lose 3-0. Maybe 3-1 if we’re lucky. What do you think?

beckham will b a dissappointment 2 u, but he will still win games and make mls better.

his football career is near dead, its all just publicity now...

PS. chelskis U15 reserve team could beat u. u do nt stand a chance! lol
  • Chris, you're not the only one. I'm finding this whole Beckham thing increasingly depressing. He's one of eleven players who will be on the field. The entire team is what matters to me, (which is kind of humorous, given that I just discovered the team this year) and the Brand Beckham hoopla just kind of makes my skin crawl. I don't want the hoopla and the drama. I just want a good game. I wanted Beckham here to improve the quality of the game, not so we could watch the uber-creepy Posh on Jay Leno.
  • Am I the only one who feels Beckham coming over is going to actually hurt the MLS? Sure, they'll get more exposure, but for all the wrong reasons. Nobody cares about what actually matters, the game. They just care that Beckham's here with Posh. And he's certainly not a Kaka type who can take over a game and dazzle the crowd. He's the quintessential role player with one plus plus attribute. Even then, he'll get, what, 4-5 free kicks in range of goal every game? That's not enough to satiate an American audience. I really think his presence will drag the sport down from a purist's viewpoint. He's just showing how much of a sideshow the MLS really is. If American soccer wanted to be taken seriously then they'd start by investing that insane Beckham contract into youth development in order to produce a wave of talent. This is just marketing, and I highly doubt he'll still be here in 18 months. I think we might actually see him throw up on the pitch during his first game when he sees the talent around him.

Chelsea is going to be playing largely for form, not for victory, so I see a pretty mild 2-1 win for them over Galaxy. They won't want to lose, but they'll be playing the young and reserve players - Jose just wants everyone fit and ready for August - its the Prem he cares about.
