Bergkamp Talking to Galaxy?!?!
By: Laurie | July 30th, 2007
Wha…huh…WHAT?!? Dennis Bergkamp? Where the heck did this rumor come from?
(I am utilizing all of my self control and NOT using the unoriginal headline, “The Iceman Cometh.” Aren’t you proud of me?)
I’m finding this in one soccer blog, which gives its source, without a link, as “The People.” I can’t find an original source anywhere and am not even sure what “The People” is. So judge credibility here for yourself. Because when something this juicy pops up, I’d be letting you down if I didn’t post it. Even if it has no basis in fact. Right? (And yes, in a nutshell, that does sum up my entire blogging philosophy.)
The People says [Dennis] Bergkamp spent time with Galaxy chief Alexei Lalas on Thursday, though the ex-Arsenal star’s agent, Rob Jansen, has rejected suggestions he was discussing a move.
Yes, that would be the same retired former Arsenal superstar Dennis Bergkamp who is currently thirty-eight years old. The former Netherlands international who played his last international game in…oh…2000 or so.
So yeah, why don’t we go ahead and sign him? And while we’re at it, we can change the name of MLS to RLS — Retirement League Soccer. Nothing against Bergkamp, who was a legend in his time, but this would be a step in the wrong direction. NASL, here we come.

Here is the original “article.” Wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you?

Laurie, it would be helpful to make a list of old players that have NOT been linked with the Galaxy. Pele, Beckenbauer….hmmm…can’t think of any others.

He may be 38 but he’d still be the best player on the Galaxy if he did come to here, long live Dennis!
Seriously though he won’t fly so it’s rather unlikely he will ever come to LA even for a vacation much less play there in the MLS.

Good point, Ken. That LA-New England Greyhound trip would be a real bitch.

My grand father was contacted by Lalas, but i rejected the offer, only 45 millions$, it wasn’t serious…

Will you Galaxy zealots lay off the frickin’ retired guys? It’s like a fetish or something?

wow! i really hope this is another stupid rumor!!! liked it stated in the original entry NASL here we come. this won’t be a step in wrong direction, it will be suicide!!! pele will probably think of coming out of retirement again. speaking of pele, he really needs to keep his mouth shut. first he says that kaka is the best player in the world. kaka is VERY good, but just cause he’s from brazil doesn’t make him the greatest. second he puts no american men on the fifa 100 best greatest athletes and puts more brazilians than any other country. lastly, he tells beckham to be a soccer player and not a movie star. he states that all beckham has done his career was cater to fans and the media. shut up pele!!! by the way pele isn’t the greatest player of all time….. Diego Armando Maradona is!!!!

Oh Laurie, how you tickle my fancy!
Bergkamp is THE player that made me the football fan that I am today. I saw the match he scored a hat trick against Leceister (with none other than Kasey Keller in goal) in 1997 and he’s been my favorite player since then. His goal against Argentina in World Cup 98 is one of the classiest goals ever.
But, he does have a fear of flying which rules him out of ever playing in MLS.
Here’s a list of players that, at the age of 38, he would still be faster and better on the ball than: Chris Klein, Kyle Martino, Kevin Harmse, Troy Roberts, and myself of course.
So, after second thoughts, maybe we could do like the A-Team did with B.A. Barracus and drug him whenever they had to travel?

Doug, it pleases me to have given you your own little Zidane-like moment of hope.
And I am always in favor of whatever drugs are necessary to suit the occasion.
I mean…wait… Hi, kids!
