Bruce Arena Gets Officially Introduced as our New Coach Today, 11:00
By: Laurie | August 18th, 2008
Soccer by Ives is reporting that Bruce Arena gets his official introduction today as Galaxy coach today at 11:00. And he’s bringing Dave Sarachan with him as his assistant.
What does this mean for Cobi? I have no clue, aside from Ives’ assertion that “Cobi Jones is expected to remain on the Galaxy coaching staff.” If I were Cobi, I believe I’d be rather pissed. Way to show loyalty to somebody who’s been permanently loyal to you, AEG. Cobi now becomes a figurehead.
Or maybe I’m wrong. What do you think?
Ives also has an interesting read on Arena’s attempt at Redemption-by-Galaxy over at ESPNSoccerNet that includes this little reminder:
Arena found himself in a similar situation in the middle of the 2006 season when he took over a Red Bulls team in a state of flux. He was able to get the most out of a Red Bulls team that didn’t have a fraction of the talent the current Galaxy team has and lead it into the playoffs (and pretty close to an upset of D.C. United).
Unfortunately for Arena, that first season isn’t what is remembered about his brief tenure with the Red Bulls. What is remembered is a disappointing second season and rumors of players revolting against Arena and helping convince Red Bull that Arena wasn’t the man for the job. Arena’s term ended when he was forced out after the 2007 season, leading to questions of whether Arena was still the coach he was when he was masterminding the D.C. United dynasty more than a decade ago.
He goes on to talk about why the short tenure with Red Bulls shouldn’t be the sole criteria for judging him, but… I dunno, folks. There’s a chance that this could salvage the season, but I don’t think it will fix the team.
