Buddle for USMNT?

By: jen | June 15th, 2008

Just another thought here. Excepting today’s rout of Barbados it seems that the USMNT is still lacking a consistent finisher up top. Does Buddle deserve another look?

I have to say that Eddie Johnson has been unimpressive as of late. He’s a bit lumbering. And Ching, while providing a great target in the air, is not as impressive in creating chances. Clint Dempsey is playing well, but he’s only one man.

The speed and vision of Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, and lately Freddy Adu deserve better from their forward line.

What do you think? He could come in for a look before the August matches, especially if he keeps this scoring up. As Derek Zoolander would say, “He’s so hot right now!”

Guys I’d rather see up top besides Josh Wolff or Eddie Johson, in no particular order:

    -Brian Ching
    -Edson Buddle
    -Jozy
    -Kenny Cooper
    -Me
    -You
    -Greg Lalas.
    -Anthony Lalas.
-The guy in section 232, Row 8, Seat 5 at the Home Depot Center.

    I think I’ve said enough…
Maybe Coach Bradley needs to make EJ watch Alec Baldwin’s scene from “GlenGarry, Glen Ross”

well with an 8-0 rout of Barbados, a lot of non regular players look to be playing in that game. With that said…

Edson Buddle is good but not great. He’s an MLS player at best and I don’t see him on the level of a national team player. I don’t even know if he’d be good enough to sit on the bench for a European club (even a Coca Cola Championship side)

Cooper deserves a shot before Buddle.

Ha-ha-ha Kevin! I’m a very visual person, and I just got a glimpse of myself on the field with the MNT. Ha-ha-ha!!

I agree that Buddle is used to playing against MLS defenses, and that may not transfer to the international level. But he’s receiving service at an international level with Donovan and Becks.

I’m not saying he should or shouldn’t get a chance. I’m just thinking out loud and enjoying reading your opinions.

Assuming EJ and Demps have the current “lock” for the starting forwards, in order of preference, here are people that deserve a shot:

    1 – Jozy
    2 – Brian Ching
    3 – Cooper

Buddle needs to show this all season for consideration – coming from an Bulls guy, this may be a Buddle flash in the pan.

Buddle is someone that should be considered if he can continue throughout the season scoring goals. EJ just needs to not be there (not the same player from a few years ago) and more than likely Ching as well. Cooper should have been given a chance already and we all know Jozy will more than likely be our striker choice in the not too distant future.

Buddle is hot-and-cold, and always has been. That being said, I think he should get a look (at least in camp) during these early stages of qualifying, though I would rate Cooper and Ching ahead of him.

My friend and I were at the 8-0 thrashing of Barbados on Sunday, and we both commented that Ching wasn’t playing that great of a game. Sure, he got two goals, but both were pretty lucky. He’s not very quick, which is definitely going to be a problem in the future. I’d like to see Jozy partnered with EJ or Twellman.

Ching never does all that well at the international level. But he is tall and his head is a target. We haven’t really had that since McBride retired. But Altidore has it. And but for his injury and transfer, I think he would have been playing. I love Buddle and was excited when he came to the Galaxy, but I don’t think he can compete at that level. Johnson is okay as a backup and may get better.

Personally, I have always thought Donovan was more effective as a striker than a midfielder. I would start him and Altidore up front, with Dempsey, Adu, and Bradley in the midfield. For the fourth midfielder I’m not sure between Lewis, Edu, and Feilhaber.

For all the poo-pooing about Edson, statistically he’s still a higher-level producer than most of the other forwards mentioned, including Landycakes. Just do the math, Buddle deserves his spot. And it will only improve his game overall. He needs to be playing internationally.
