Buh-Bye Tyrone, Hullo Edson
By: Laurie | June 14th, 2007
Yeesh, I take ONE little day for family stuff and I miss ALL the excitement.
Remember wa-a-a-y back in the preseason? When we still had that little thing called “hope”? And when we had two defenders who’d played together for Jamaica — Tyrone Marshall and Shavar Thomas — and we were talking about all the synergy that would create for the Galaxy back line? Was that really just a couple of months ago?
How things change. First Shavar gets sent off to Chivas. And now we’ve shed Tyrone too.
Yesterday was actually a very eventful day for Tyrone. He got a three game suspension and a $1500 fine for taking out FrankenCooper in the last game AND he got FedExed to Toronto in exchange for Edson Buddle. Poor Tyrone.
So how many trades does that make for Toronto this season? Isn’t is something like 500? Does anybody else wonder if maybe the Toronto owners were obsessed with trading sports cards as children and are now thrilled to have the money to do the same with real, live players?
But anyhoo. Buh-bye, Tyrone. Sorry things didn’t work out. I’ll genuinely miss your hair.
So what do we know about this trade, other than the fact that our new acquisition, Edson Buddle, has perhaps the least poetic name in history, ever, bar none? (And for some reason, thanks to Tom of the Chicago Fire Offside, I will never, ever be able to hear the name “Edson Buddle” without thinking of the treat Tom traveled to Toronto for, Chip Buddies. This was not a problem when he was playing for Toronto, but now? Thank you so much, Tom.)
In theory, Eddie is what the Galaxy needs — more power up front, with some potential to actually put the ball in the net. But will things work out that way? I don’t have much of an opinion on this question yet, so I’ll offer up the thoughts of my fellow bloggers. My brother-in-blog Sam at Toronto Offside thinks this is a good thing. For Toronto. Dan Loney, on the other hand, is a little less positive. His opinion? Has-been Traded for Never Was.
Oh. Ouch. Harsh.
My thought? He’ll be a definite improvement over Tyrone for the next three games, given his extraordinary ability to actually be, y’know, on the field.
After that? We’ll see.
