Chinese Defender Yao Lijun To Galaxy?

By: Laurie | March 5th, 2007

I’m not 100% certain this is accurate, because my only source is ChinaDaily.com, and their third-most-viewed article at the moment is about the Paris Hilton sex video. But they report that “Shanghai Shenhua’s defender Yao Lijun is expected to become the first Chinese teammate of David Beckham if he is able to survive his trial session with the Los Angeles Galaxy.”

Because we all know how easy that is to do. Right, Laurent? (Sigh.) Although Galaxy needs defenders a whole bunch more than forwards at the moment, and this would be an expensive little sightseeing trip to pay for, so Galaxy management must think it will work out.

What do I know about Yao Lijun? Not a whole lot, aside from the fact that he’ll be here after he receives his visa. And that there are apparently several people with the same name who have nothing to do with soccer. And that he didn’t play in Shanghai Shenhua’s 5-1 victory over Petrokimia Putra. (It is so bizarre the little irrelevant tidbits that turn up when you do a google search.) Alas, I can’t even offer you a photo or a YouTube video. Yet.

But stay tuned, folks. As soon as he hits US shores, I am SO there with coverage.
