Chris Albright and Those Transfer Rumors
By: Laurie | May 17th, 2007
Chris Albright had a chat with Luis Bueno of LA Soccer News about the rumors, reported by Grahame Jones in the LA Times, that he might be traded for Carlos Ruiz. These rumors seemed to take on added credibility when the Abel Xavier rumor discussed in the same article came true on Monday.
So what does Chris think about the rumors?
“Rumors are always going to be prevalent,” Albright said. “It’s interesting they were printed without much validity unless there is something I don’t know. As far as I know, I’m here for now
Good. That’s good. Because I’m not completely convinced that we could absorb the loss of Albright right now, even if we have managed to come up with a player who can play rightback and who has more interesting hair.
But wait a minute. What does GM Alexi Lalas have to say about all this?
“We don’t anticipate making any changes,” Lalas said on Monday. “Having said that, it’s part of my job to constantly be looking at opportunities to upgrade. There are options out there and there are possibilities out there but they are very, very preliminary.”
But wait! When you go to Luis Bueno’s blog, Sideline Views, he adds more:
Before the conference call, Grahame talked to another reporter about the deal and just by the way he was talking I got the sense that the trade is going to happen.
Or, in other words: Chris! Watch your back!
(Oh, want to see something humorous? When I was doing a photo search for this picture, I came across this article suggesting that Derby County take a look at acquiring Chris. Hey, Chris! Derby County! What do you think?)

Derby is a good team. And if they win the Championship playoff against West Brom on May 28th, they’ll be in the Premiership! Go you Rams!

Derby County’s also the current home of our former trialist Darren Currie. I clicked on your link and voted for him for Man of the Match. Even though I’m not actually sure what the match was. You know, for old times’ sake. I was one of 0.7% of voters who voted for our Darren. Or maybe I WAS the .7%. Oooh, the power!
This leads to an interesting question. At what point do MLS and the English leagues become equal? Meaning at what level would a solid, non-superstar player like Chris Albright consider a jump to England to be neither a step up nor a step down?
I’m thinking most people would consider most of EPL to be a step up. Would you agree? But what about relegation-bound Watford? Or possibly-promotion-bound Championship team Derby County? Or other teams in the Championship League? What do you think?
An interesting topic for discussion.
