Chris Birchall Is Signed

By: jen | July 8th, 2009

Chris Birchall, a Trinidad and Tobago midfielder, has been signed to a four year contract by the Galaxy. This should be a great pick up! He received his P1 Visa on Monday and will be officially added to the roster on July 15th when the transfer window opens.

Arena’s comments from the press release:

“Chris is a player that I’ve tracked for a number of years. He is an experienced midfielder with good qualities on both sides of the ball who I feel he will be able to contribute immediately as we push for a playoff position.”

If he works well for us this could be a HUGE signing — he is only 25 and still has many years left in his legs. It looks as though Arena is building a new generation of Galaxy players after all.

Birchall is a very solid signing. Well done LA.

I saw some highlights of him playing in England and with T&T. Seems to be a modern day Greg Maddux, aka “Chicks Dig The Long Ball.”

I’m curious to see what our lineup will look like, and if we’ll see Buddle and Esky on the field at the same time…

So, Buddle and Esky up front and Lewis, Donovan, Birchall, and Beckham across the middle?

Sounds pretty good to me, especially if that middle line can work together.

I don’t know how Arena is managing to finagle these signings, but I like that he’s not satisfied with the current state and that he’s willing to keep mixing things up.

The real question is who gets cut from the current roster to make room for him

I don’t know who gets cut, but it almost doesn’t matter when you read this from Soto:

“So, Buddle and Esky up front and Lewis, Donovan, Birchall, and Beckham across the middle?”

    Um, ef yeah!!!

The Galaxy midfield becomes even slower. Eddie Lewis is washed-up.

He was great last night in the Toronto game. He and Beckham work well together.
