Dallas vs. LA Galaxy — leave comments here

By: Laurie | July 27th, 2008

Stole the photo from the Galaxy homepage. Is this not the most adorable photo ever?

(Wait. I hate Ruiz. Don’t I?)

But that photo was the last game. Today’s topic is today’s game. FC Dallas vs. LA Galaxy. Last time we met, we came away with a 5-1 win and got Steve Morrow fired.

Heehee. Good times.

Sean Franklin is back in training. The Official Galaxy blog said they’d make a fit-or-not decision yesterday, but I haven’t found an official word one way or the other.

The official injury report:

INJURY REPORT: FC DALLAS – OUT: DF David Wagenfuhr (concussion); QUESTIONABLE: GK Ray Burse (R ankle); PROBABLE: MF Bobby Rhine (L ankle) …

LOS ANGELES GALAXYOUT: GK Vito Higgins (R foot); DOUBTFUL: GK Charles Alamo (R knee); DF Sean Franklin (R knee); MF Bryan Jordan (R hamstring); MF Brandon McDonald (L foot); PROBABLE: GK Josh Wicks (L knee)

So it’s good news that we have so many who have been moved from “Out” to “Doubtful.” Right? This injury list is reminding me of last year, except that Beckham isn’t on it.

I’m hopeful, though. If the new guy plays to shore up the defense, we could do 5-1 again. Prove it wasn’t a fluke.

Right?

(If you’re watching the game, leave comments.)

  • Sorry, guys!! No, I haven't given up. I love this blog!!

In fact, I'm working on something that will make this blog much, much better. Stay tuned this week for an unveiling. In the meantime, be patient with us.

    :-)
  • Glen
It'll be interesting to see what rumor's pan out. Pete to China (he needs to be retired from the galaxy, but to china), Solano maybe to the Galaxy (maybe help hold midfield), Landon to Fulham (hate to see him go but it would be good for him and our nat. team), Gibbs possibly to the Galaxy (if he can stay healthy it would be good). who knows!

what about today's game against San Jose, for sure a different team than we last played them. this could be a very tough game for us. they now have some play makers that could get in behind our porous defense and hopefully our new defender will have a better game along with the rest of the team from the dallas fiasco :p
  • Glen
    I agree, where's the postings :p
  • Nicole
So Laurie, what's up? have you given up on us? No postings all week.
  • danny
so i solano to the galaxy 100%? i read a snipet from his interview on sky sports stating that he was still trying to play top flight football in europe dated aug. 1st. solano would be a great pickup.. but obviously would not address the lowly defense whatsoever.
  • Luis
Vito has been waived and mike munoz just signed. Good call I say. He was looking good in those reserve games
  • Hey guys,
MLS Rumors (which admittedly throw anything on the page) are talking some Galaxy rumors. Landon to Fulham ((whatever)...but....
PETE TO CHINA !!(a bit of overkill, but far from LA is good for me) Still think he should stay in the organization somehow instead of this.
  • Justin
Thats a scary one there it could either be good or really bad, with his injuries.
  • Sam
Does the LAG take Cory Gibbs in the allocation??? hmm, he is under 30 LOL
  • Justin
Yeah, got you there I know a few of the guys out there too but have not heard anything bad.
  • Sam
Justin...LAG player told my friend, who told me, I cant really say more or there may be consequences to my friend and the LAG player...
  • Justin
Theres speculation but I have not seen anything for sure and rumors/hooligan are not always reliable. :) Ruiz back to dallas would just shock me, but a new coach could change things there maybe.

I wonder who's going to replace Lalas as GM.
  • Justin
Where did you read this stuff? cause Carlos back to Dallas would amaze me.
  • DAVE
Laurie, I just read that Lalas may be on his way out, Noberto Solano is a done deal, & Carlos Ruiz may be going back to Dallas...do you have any new details?
  • Justin
Jordan has been loaned back to Portland Timbers for the rest of their season.
  • Justin
Hey Sam is this someone you know? or did you overhear something? is it an article? or are you just making something up?

I'm just hoping that what Xavier said about Ruud isn't true. I mean, [i[someone[/i] has done a decent job of bringing up the young 'uns. And I think that his tactics are sound. But most of the team has to have respect for the coach or the team becomes a bunch of scattered, nonproductive talent.
  • Sam
According to another LAG player who was on the field in Dallas, what X said about Ruud is true and its actually worse.....
  • David
What was the lineup? Did he play Donovan as a midfielder again? I have said before that never works out well.
  • Justin
Reserves Tied 2-2, Izzy with another good game. I think we should bring him up to the first team and then move Landon to the CAM, with Izzy playing LM and Becks on the RM.

TJ - I have to disagree with you about Cronin. Great lateral movement? He doesn't move his feet. Watch him carefully on the first goal. With one half step and his long reach he should of had it. GK's must have foot speed. For a big man Friedel has great foot speed and he's almost 50 years old.
  • Marcus
Most pathetic play by a soccer team in a long time. Galaxy did NOTHING well in the game, and looked as if they did not care or worst yet, were sub-par talent to FC Dallas. Why does LA have a tendency, in a lot of years, of NEVER taking shorts. Too much passing, which was bad at that, and NO SHOTS on goal. The funny white thing with holes in it, that is what you shoot at guys! No defense, no mid-field play, no scoring at the forward position; no quality at ANY position!
  • TJ
One last diatribe to all you Cronin haters - he would be a much better keeper if he had a defense that could actually stop some strikers. No keeper in this league could have stopped FC Dallas from scoring yesterday with the defense that the Galaxy have. No one. Cronin has great lateral movement and reaction - just needs to improve on his positioning skills - but that only comes when you have confidence in your defensive mates - which hell I don't think himself or anyone has. Cronin is all we got. Wicks isn't any better as a keeper - he would be stranded out there just like Cronin with the defense of the Galaxy.
    FIRE LALAS!!!
  • TJ
Family commitments made me miss this game but from the highlights I caught and the running commentary I saw, I guess I didn't miss anything. Four nil? Unbelievable.
When oh when is AEG going to fire Lalas? I preach this week in & week out & my wife is tired of hearing me say this, but Lalas has no business being a GM - none whatsoever. Move him to media relations - that is all he is good at - running his mouth and taking pictures with fans.
Steve & Limey - you are correct about Tudela - he needs to be starting. Pires is a waste of space back there - he is slow and his tackling is pathetic - I have seen 12 year olds tackle better than this.
The backline - pathetic - have to give Dominguez another chance to get used to game conditions with this team before making comments about his play. Vanny needs to retire - he cannot keep up in this league.
Overall, I would not be surprised if this team does NOT make the playoffs - most of their 2nd half of the season is played on the road and their record is pathetic. Only 5 home games left. I would not be surprised if this team gets gutted after the season - Landon realizing that it is time to move to Europe, Buddle to Europe, Ruiz gone?, Beckham retiring and becoming a principal owner for the Miami expansion club. Gullit may leave or stay and become GM of this club. Some if not all may happen - only time with tell. BUT PLEASE AEG - FIRE LALAS!!!
  • Limey
I second Steve'e motion on Tudela, the guy works hard and is not afraid of a hard tackle. I also agree on Landy, that's his achilies heel, no consitancy world class one week, where is he the next week. While i disagree with Steve about Xavier (who probaly would have refused to play on that pitch) I am beggining to wonder if X's comments on Ruud may be true.
  • Oh..and Bob. I really wanted you to be right about Cronin, no apologies necessary.
  • I know I'm in a minority of Xavier supporters, but I have a hard time believing that Vanney or Dominguez are improvements at the CB role. Xavier had that really bad game that sealed his fate, but the turnovers by Vanney and Dominguez were no less deplorable. At least Dominguez got his shit together in the second half.
Pass-back Pete...seems like a nice guy, but most of his forward balls were cut off and his raised passes were consistently low. Does anybody remember the second half of last season when the Galaxy had a good run. The one factor in all the games they won...Josh Tudela!! The kid's really good and needs the time out there.
I was glad to see them force Franklin out there (poor kid). He's a star. They should put him up to Pires' position (who was awful last night) as soon as reinforcements come. But with the Solano sigining, I guess Sean will stay back.
Landycakes was invisible most of the night. He's been way off form the past few games. It could be a positional thing, but even when he's been forward, he floats around without direction. Not a good advertisement for the August EPL transfer window.
Klein..great to see him always, and last night he was the heart of the team.
Cronin's gotta go. I've been to the reserve games and Wicks wasn't any worse.
    Bring back Tudela!!!
  • Limey
Embarrassing, I can’t think of any other way to describe it. This game was one of those occasions when players should be told they were so bad they are not getting paid, including Becks.
How on that first goal non of three Galaxy players, Pires, Jasic and ? could not close Cooper down I’ll never know. You could see what he was shaping up to do and they watched him do it. The fact that Cronin was slow to get down is not the point, Cooper should not have gotten the shot off.
I have to assume that the Galaxy coaches know that one of our injured keepers is close to being fit, there is no other explanation for continuing to stick with Cronin, he can’t even figure out how wide and how high the goal is.
Chris Klein played well and at least looked like he cared; the rest of them should be ashamed they were pathetic.
  • El Toro
    HeeHee, good Times!!!!
  • JustJack
Laurie, I agree with you about the heat. Carlos looked like he was about to fall over any second. I know when I've referee'd matches at 100+ it's damned hard to stay upright let along perform well. (Thank the universe for Law Five).

I wished for Gordon sooner and for Carlos to come off and get an IV. Were your maternal areas tingling? My paternal ones were... I kept shouting at the screen, water, for frack's sake, give them more water!
  • MrsJack
It's one thing to play badly, but it's another thing to play badly and get $949K for it.
  • Only thing I'll say in our boys' defense is that I checked the temperature about midway thruogh the first half and it said 102.
  • JustJack
Pitch... it's like an AYSO field at week 16. Our game today.... dammit. just dammit.

I was going to think Landycakes on that side was okay but... no. Just no.

New guy from argentina... I'll comment next match. He's new. Cronin... I feel for ya buddy... ya had no defense at all. Ed-SON... my boy, doing his job, but double teamed, pushed from behind like a bazillion times, and not finishing worth a damn today... aw crap. Vanney... too slow, too old why is he even there? I cannot drink enough beer to drown my sorrows today. Dammit.

I saw ball watching like that on the season opener. I thought I would never see it again. frankly, I think all the boys who played today owe ME a beer. I need twelve of 'em to block out that craptastic Dallas fantasy...
  • Bob
    Memo to Galaxy players:
You can shoot the ball outside the box. You do not have to pass it to someone in the box to take a shot.
Landon needs to play forward. He is invisable at left mid. I gave Cronin a chance, but after today's match, it is time for a new keeper. Sorry Steve.
What is up with that cow pasture of a field???
  • Scott
I was kind of hoping Friedel was gonna leave England. On can dream eh?
  • DAVE
Scott that's funny. Xavier is watching the game at his hairdresser's laughing his bleach off! Hopefully this was the last wake up call. Sorry but CONE-NIN must go.
  • Scott
The new guy needs to just do his Scooby-do ending, rip off his mask to show us Xavier's face.

Franklin has a future. THe rest of them to include our day-dreaming goalkeeper need to go to the USL next year.
  • Glen
with the ass whooping, maybe they'll be embarrassed enough to get it together for the next game. we need some points 'cause we could be 2nd to last real quick in the western points
  • Our new boy's been pretty invisible. Vanney's been okay, Vagenas has been surprisingly visible, Franklin's comeback hasn't been too bad. Other than that, we've sucked.
  • Ho. Lee. Crap. 4-0. It doesn't get much worse than this. We hope.
  • Glen
    crap, another goal!
  • Glen
So how has our new defender looked? 3 goals down sounds like our D didn't gel well together
  • DAVE
Complete rubish! Hype, hype, hype doen't win matches! Yeah it's was a bad game...all that guff. Only high points for me were Franklin return and Klein's work rate.
  • Glen
23 shots to our 11, damn!
  • Glen
Laurie from the look of it, Dallas could have 5 or 6 goals right now. is our reserve team out there?
  • And Glen, the worst part? The second half has been much better than the first.
  • Glen
just turned the game on in the 68th minute, what the hell is going on? 3 goals down.
  • Scott
Wow! What a defense! I like the ol' get'em overconfident before we make a crushing comeback tactic too.

Hey, they are fast but we are....slow....and mostly old back there. Does Lalas have a clue that if the other team outscores you they win?

"The Galaxy is pleased to anounce the signing of a new Bolivian Defender who once made Pele slow down to go around him in the late 1950's. He has been a key role player for the Central American Master's League since 1977. The Galaxy welcomes...."

    Sheez
  • DAVE
I thought Dominguez was a quality defender? How do you say nightmare debut in castilia? Cornin is a bench player. He's not a starter! HE CAN'T MOVE HIS DAMN FEET! He relies on too much on his height. COME ON BOYS WE EXPECT MORE! Ruud give them the Hairdryer treatment!
  • I want Oduro on the Galaxy.

    The end.
  • Rob
Could they suck anymore, put someone in who is willing to go after the ball
  • CRAP. Seventeen minutes in and we're down two goals!!!!!!!

Um, Landon? This would be a good time to show up!
  • All righty, Dominguez has speed. This is a good thing.
  • This scorelin in taking up the upper left quadrant of the screen is going to get VERY annoying very quickly.
