David Beckham has the Biggest…
By: Laurie | January 3rd, 2008Biggest carbon footprint, of course.
What did you think I was talking about?
As reported by my brother-in-blog Daryl over at World Cup Blog, our Becks is now officially the most environmentally damaging person on the planet. Ever. In history. Bar none.
Why is this, you ask?
Well, obviously it’s because he never re-uses his underwear, preferring to throw them away after wearing rather than trusting the laundry to get out the ickies. (True story.)
But wait. No. The article doesn’t mention that.
What they do mention is the 15 cars, including a Hummer, and the gazillions of miles he flew this year.
LA Galaxy star Becks, 32, not only owns a fleet of 15 gas-guzzling supercars, he has clocked up more than 250,000 miles in the air in the last year – more than the distance to the far side of the Moon.
His hectic travel schedule has notched up a staggering 163 tons of CO2, compared with the 9.4 tons of the average Brit.
It is also far higher than the tally for world leaders.
Publicity stunt on the part of the environmental group? Sure. But they’re not making this up.
Yes, a fair bit of the travel is work related, but not all. I have to admit to being bothered by all of the “and then Posh and Becks hired a private jet to fly to Paris/London/wherever to spend lots of money on things they don’t need that they’ll just throw out in a few weeks” stories.
If this makes them think twice about their lifestyle and alter it a bit?
Well, then, David, feel free to continue throwing out your underwear.

Hey Laurie, Happy New Year! You published this because you missed me and knew how concerned about the environment I am. So, I’d focus on the CO2 and not worry about the pants tossing — he was asked in an interview about that and wearing new trainers (sneakers) everyday, said no to undies, but admitted yes to daily trainer rotation. Embarrassed enough to insist he gives them away, he must be aware of the impact the rubber soles make on the environment
so clearly a short note should bring him up to date on the jet fuel issue.ARE WE TRADING YET? MY FIRST MLS SWAP SEASON!!! To say nothing of the draft but I assume that’s similar to the other NCAA festivities.
